American League
The American League divisional winners are the Houston Astros, the Cleveland Indians, and the Boston Red Sox. The wild card teams are the New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays.
Boston Red Sox
The Boston Red Sox are an American professional baseball team based in Boston, Massachusetts. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. The Red Sox have won eight World Series championships and have played in 13. Founded in 1901 as one of the American League’s eight charter franchises, the Red Sox’ home ballpark has been Fenway Park since 1912. The “Red Sox” name was chosen by the team owner, John I. Taylor, circa 1908, following previous Boston teams that had been known as the “Red Stockings”, including the forerunner of the Atlanta Braves.
Cleveland Indians
The American League of Major League Baseball ( MLB) is one of two leagues that make up the organization. The AL consists of 15 teams, and they are divided into three divisions: East, West, and Central.
In order for a team to make it to the playoffs, they must first win their division. As of September 28th, the teams that have clinched their division and have earned a spot in the playoffs are the Cleveland Indians, Los Angeles Angels, and Houston Astros.
The Indians have had a great season! They have currently won 101 games and lost 58. Some of their star players include outfielder Michael Brantley, shortstop Francisco Lindor, and pitcher Carlos Carrasco. Manager Terry Francona has done an incredible job leading this team, and they definitely have a chance at taking home the World Series title this year.
Houston Astros
The Houston Astros are an American professional baseball team based in Houston, Texas. The Astros compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) West division, having moved to the division in 2013 after spending their first 51 seasons in the National League (NL). The Astros have played their home games at Minute Maid Park since 2000.
New York Yankees
The New York Yankees are an American professional baseball team based in the Bronx, New York City. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. They are one of two major league clubs based in New York City; the other is the National League’s (NL) New York Mets. The Yankees began play in 1901 as an expansion team and have won 27 World Series championships, which is more than double any other MLB team. The franchise has garnered a negative public image for their frequent winning and use of highly paid stars.
National League
The Milwaukee Brewers, Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Colorado Rockies have all clinched spots in the National League playoffs. The Brewers will have the best record in the NL and will host the Wild Card game. The Cubs and Dodgers will play each other in the other NL Divisional Series.
Arizona Diamondbacks
The Arizona Diamondbacks, often shortened as the D-backs, are an American professional baseball team based in Phoenix, Arizona. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) West division, where they are the defending World Series champions.
Colorado Rockies
The Colorado Rockies are a professional baseball team based in Denver, Colorado. The Rockies compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) West division. The team’s home stadium is Coors Field, located in the Lower Downtown area of Denver.
The Rockies have won one National League championship, in 2007, after having won 21 of their final 22 games in order to secure a Wild Card position. In the World Series they were swept by the American League (AL) champion Boston Red Sox in four games.
Los Angeles Dodgers
The Los Angeles Dodgers are an American professional baseball team based in Los Angeles, California. The Dodgers compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) West division. Established in 1883 in Brooklyn, New York, the team moved to Los Angeles before the 1958 season. They played four seasons at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum before moving to their current home of Dodger Stadium in 1962.
