Who Will Play in the NFL Monday Night Football Game?

The NFL Monday Night Football game is one of the most highly-anticipated matchups of the week. Who will be playing in this week’s game?

The Teams

The New England Patriots

The New England Patriots are a professional American football team based in the Greater Boston area. The Patriots compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) East division. The team plays its home games at Gillette Stadium in the town of Foxborough, Massachusetts, which is located 28 miles (45 km) southwest of downtown Boston.

The Patriots are also headquartered at Gillette Stadium. An original member of the American Football League (AFL), the Patriots joined the NFL in the 1970 merger of the two leagues. The team changed its name from the original Boston Patriots after relocating to Foxborough in 1971. The Patriots played their home games at Foxboro Stadium from 1971 to 2001, then moved to Gillette Stadium at the start of 2002 season. Between 2002 and 2017, they played all but two of their regular season games at Gillette Stadium.

The Patriots have appeared in ten Super Bowls since 1981, winning six of them – Super Bowls XXXI (1996), XXXVI (2001), XXXVIII (2003), XLIX (2014), LI (2016), and LIII (2018). They won their first ever Super Bowl appearance in 2001 against then-St. Louis Rams’ quarterback Kurt Warner, who was named that year’sRegular Season MVP and Super Bowl MVP, winning both awards a record three times each. With their victory over the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LIII, they set a new record for most appearances by one franchise with eleven trips overall and became only one of two teams ever to win six Lombardi Trophies along with Pittsburgh Steelers as well as matching both franchises with thirteen total NFL Championships.(pre-1970 AFL–NFL merger; post-1970 AFC–NFC merger).

The Miami Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins are a professional American football team based in the Miami metropolitan area. The Dolphins compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) East division. The Dolphins play their home games at Hard Rock Stadium in the northern suburb of Miami Gardens, Florida, and are headquartered in Davie, Florida. The Dolphins are Florida’s oldest professional sports team.Of all current NFL teams, they are one of three teams to own their stadium; the others being the Atlanta Falcons and New York Jets.

The team was founded by attorney-politician Joe Robbie and actor-comedian Danny Thomas. They began play in 1966 as an expansion team in the American Football League (AFL), and joined the NFL as part of the AFL–NFL merger in 1970. The team made immediate strides, reaching the playoffs in only their second season, but found far less success over their ensuing decades than they had experienced in their early years – including a 1–15 record in 2007 – which prompted extensive changes both within and outside of the organization over the following several years. Sincerelaunching themselves with back-to-back winning seasons in 2016 and 2017 under head coach Adam Gase, quarterback Ryan Tannehill, and running back Jay Ajayi (since traded), attendance at home games increased significantly over that timespan.

Robbie hired Don Shula from Baltimore Colts head coach Weeb Ewbank to lead the side, who had achieved great success with both Ewbank’s Colts teams that won consecutive NFL championships during 1958 and 1959, and again with his Miami Chargers/Colts team that won Super Bowl VI after merging into the AFL; Shula brought a similar winning mentality to his new organization.

The region had not had a professional football team since the days of the Miami Seahawks, who played in the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) in 1946 before becoming the first incarnation of the Baltimore Colts. For the first few years, play was sporadic due to injuries to key players and inconsistent quarterback play. Starting quarterback Dick Wood behaved erratically on and off the field; Wood was eventually replaced by John Stofa. After enduring a winless 1–13 season in 1967, head coach George Wilson was fired and replaced by Lou Saban.
