Contents
The National Football League’s Thursday Night Football game is one of the most highly-anticipated events of the week. Who will be playing in this game?
The Teams
The New England Patriots
The New England Patriots are a professional American football team based in the Greater Boston area. The Patriots compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) East division. The team plays its home games at Gillette Stadium in the town of Foxborough, Massachusetts, which is located 21 miles (34 km) southwest of downtown Boston.
The Patriots are also headquartered at Gillette Stadium. The team logo is a blue rectangle with a red triangle on top that has white stripes running down its sides and white stars inside the triangle; it resembles both the American flag and the lettering on a ship’s hull. The Patriots have won 17 Divisional championships (tied for second most in NFL history), eight Conference championships (tied for second most in NFL history), and six Super Bowl championships (tied for first most all-time with the Pittsburgh Steelers). The franchise has appeared in more Divisional Round playoff games (27) than any other team, and has advancements to more AFC Championship Games (15) than any other team. They have played in ten League Championship Games, and appeared in seven Super Bowls, winning five of them – all under Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady.
As of 2019, Belichick has 27 wins against 13 losses (.675) in 30 career playoff games as head coach of the Patriots, which is a NFL record for head coaches.
The New York Jets
The New York Jets are a professional American football team located in the New York metropolitan area. They compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) East division. The Jets play their home games at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, which they share with the New York Giants. In a unique arrangement for the league, the Jets share MetLife Stadium with the Giants, who also play in the AFC East.
The team was founded in 1959 as the Titans of New York, an original member of the American Football League (AFL); later, the franchise joined the NFL in the AFL–NFL merger in 1970. The team began to play their home games at Shea Stadium in 1964 and then moved to Giants Stadium in 1984. Eight years later, following the lead of many other US-based sports franchises, they shifted to MetLife Stadium, which is located at Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford.
The Players
This Thursday’s game will feature some very talented players from both teams. On the offensive side, we have quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who is considered one of the best quarterbacks in the league. He will be going up against a strong defensive line that includes defensive end J.J. Watt.
Tom Brady
Tom Brady is a famously successful NFL quarterback who has played for the New England Patriots since 2000. He is considered one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time and has won numerous MVP awards and Super Bowls. Brady has also had success playing in Thursday night games, so he is a key player to watch in this week’s matchup.
Darrelle Revis
Former New York Jets and New England Patriots cornerback Darrelle Revis is one of the greatest defensive backs in NFL history. He’s a seven-time Pro Bowl selection and a four-time First-Team All-Pro. In 2009, he was named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year.
During his 11 seasons in the NFL, Revis has racked up 29 interceptions, 175 passes defended, four forced fumbles and eight fumble recoveries. He’s also a Super Bowl champion, winning a ring with the Patriots in 2014.
Now, at 34 years old, Revis is attempting a comeback after sitting out the entire 2018 season. He recently worked out for the Kansas City Chiefs, but they ultimately decided to sign former Seattle Seahawks cornerback Marcus Peters instead.
It remains to be seen if any other team will give Revis a shot, but it’s clear that his time as one of the league’s top cornerbacks is over.
The Game
As the National Football League (NFL) season comes to an end, the annual Thursday Night Football game becomes an important part of the schedule. The TV Ratings
TV ratings for the NFL’s Thursday Night Football game are down 11% this season, according to Nielsen.
The game between the New England Patriots and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday night was watched by an average of 14.6 million viewers on Fox and the NFL Network, down from 16.5 million last year.
The Thursday night game has been a ratings juggernaut for the NFL in recent years, but this season has seen a sharp decline in viewership. The drop-off is likely due in part to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, which has led to a decline in live sports viewership across the board.
