The NFL playoffs begin in January, following the conclusion of the regular season. In total, there are 11 weeks of NFL playoffs, culminating with the Super Bowl.
NFL Football Teams
The National Football League (NFL) is a professional American football league consisting of 32 teams, divided equally between the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC). NFL Football teams are the best of the best when it comes to playing football. NFC teams include the Dallas Cowboys, the Green Bay Packers, and the New York Giants. AFC teams include the New England Patriots, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Denver Broncos.
AFC East
The AFC East is a division of the National Football League’s American Football Conference. There are four teams in the division: the Buffalo Bills, the Miami Dolphins, the New England Patriots, and the New York Jets. All four teams are in the Eastern Time Zone.
The AFC East is one of three divisions within the AFC with four teams, along with the AFC North and NFC East. It was formed in 2002 when the NFL realigned its divisions after expanding to 32 teams with the addition of the Houston Texans. Before that, it had been two separate divisions, one for each conference. The Bills, Colts, Jets, and Patriots had been in an “AFC Eastern” division from 1970 to 2001; and prior to 1970, they were all in an “AFC East” division together with three other teams that today make up part of the AFC South: the Houston Oilers (now Tennessee Titans), Jacksonville Jaguars (an expansion team which began play in 1995), and Baltimore Ravens (another expansion team which began play in 1996).
Since winning Super Bowl XLIX in February 2015, the Patriots have won five straight AFC East titles; they have also won nine of ten division titles since 2003 (with no team other than New England having more than one during that span), and 13 of 16 dating back to 2001 (when including ties for first place).
AFC North
The AFC North is a division of the American Football Conference of the National Football League. The Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, and Pittsburgh Steelers are all members of the AFC North.
AFC South
The AFC South is a division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL). It was created on 2002 as a four-team division when the league realigned its teams into eight divisions. The AFC South’s four members are the Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Tennessee Titans.

AFC West
In the AFC West, the Kansas City Chiefs have dominated the division in recent years, winning the division crown in five of the last six seasons. The Los Angeles Chargers and Denver Broncos have been solid competitors, while the Oakland Raiders have fallen on hard times in recent years.
The Chiefs are led by dynamic young quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who is one of the most exciting players in the NFL. The Chargers have a strong team as well, led by veteran quarterback Philip Rivers. The Broncos are hoping to rebound from a tough season with a new head coach and quarterback. And the Raiders are rebuilding under new head coach Jon Gruden.
NFC East
The NFC East is a division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL). It currently has four members: the Dallas Cowboys, the New York Giants, the Philadelphia Eagles, and the Washington Redskins. All four teams are in the Eastern Time Zone. From realignment in 2002 until 2013 it contained five teams, making it the largest division in NFL history. Unlike many other NFL divisions, all four teams have won at least one Super Bowl title since the 1970 AFL–NFL merger. The NFC East is also the only division in NFL history in which all four of its members have played each other on Thanksgiving Day at least once.
NFC North
The NFC North is a division of the National Football League’s National Football Conference. It comprises four teams located in the Midwest: the Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, and Minnesota Vikings.
The NFC North was formed in 1967 as the NFL’s 16th division. The Packers were placed in the newly created division after winning Super Bowl I, and the Bears, Lions, and Vikings were placed in the NFC Central. With realignment in 2002, the Vikings were moved to the NFC South, but returned to the North after further realignment in 2010.
Since its formation, the NFC North has been one of the most competitive divisions in football. The Packers have won more championships than any other team in NFL history, with 13 total championships (four Super Bowl titles), while the Bears (nine championships) and Lions (four championships) have also been successful.
NFC South
The NFC South is a division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL). It was created prior to the 2002 NFL season when the league realigned divisions after expanding to 32 teams. For information on the history of the NFC South, see article: History of the NFC South.
The NFC South currently consists of four teams: the Carolina Panthers, the New Orleans Saints, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the Atlanta Falcons. All four teams have played in at least one Super Bowl and two-thirds of them (the Panthers and Falcons) have played in multiple Super Bowls.
NFC West
In the National Football League (NFL), the NFC West is one of the four divisions of the National Football Conference (NFC). It currently includes four teams: the Arizona Cardinals, Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers, and Seattle Seahawks. Each team plays the other three teams twice during the regular season for a total of 16 games.
The division was formed in 1967 as the NFL’s 16th division. The NFC West originally contained the Dallas Cowboys, Los Angeles Rams, Minnesota Vikings, and St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals eventually moved to the AFC East (now NFC East) in 1970, while the other three teams remained in the NFC West until 2002, when realignment moved two of those teams to different conferences; as a result of realignment, today’s NFC West is effectively a reincarnation of what was then known as the NFC Central.
The 49ers have won more games than any other team in this division and have been to more Super Bowls than any other team from this division; they have also won more Super Bowls than any other team from this division.
