Introduction

The National Football League (NFL) is a professional American football league consisting of 32 teams, divided equally between the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC). The NFL is one of the four major professional sports leagues in North America, and the highest professional level of American football in the world.

The National Football League

The American Football Conference

The American Football Conference (AFC) is one of the two conferences of the National Football League (NFL), the highest professional level of American football in the world. This conference and its counterpart, the National Football Conference (NFC), currently contain 16 teams each, making up a total of 32 teams in the NFL. Both conferences are made up of four divisions, each containing four teams.

The AFC was established in 1970 when the NFL merged with the American Football League (AFL). The AFL was originally founded in 1960 and consisted of eight charter members. These charter members were the Buffalo Bills, Denver Broncos, Houston Oilers (now the Tennessee Titans), Kansas City Chiefs, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots (then known as the Boston Patriots), Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers. The AFL began play in 1960 with a 10-game season.

In 1970, when the AFL merged with the NFL, all ten AFL teams joined the NFL and were placed in the AFC. This created a 16-team league made up of two 8-team conferences. The AFC currently has 16 teams divided into 4 divisions: North, South, East and West.
