American Football Conference

The American Football Conference (AFC) is one of the two conferences of the National Football League (NFL), the highest professional level of American football in the world. This conference and its counterpart, the National Football Conference (NFC), currently contain 16 teams each, making up a total of 32 teams in the NFL. Both conferences were created as a result of the AFL–NFL merger in 1970.

AFC teams are divided into two divisions: the East, which contains four teams, and the West, which contains five teams. Each divisional winner earns a spot in the AFC playoffs, which culminates in the AFC Championship Game, pitting the two divisional winners against each other to decide who will represent the AFC in the Super Bowl.

As of 2020, nine franchises have won Super Bowls while representing the AFC: the Oakland Raiders (XI), Pittsburgh Steelers (IX, X, XIII, XIV), Baltimore Ravens (XXXV), Miami Dolphins (VII, VIII), Cincinnati Bengals ( XVI), Denver Broncos (XXXII, XXXIII), New England Patriots (XXXVI, XXXVIII, XXXIX, XLIX, LI), Indianapolis Colts (XLI), and Kansas City Chiefs (LIV). While none of these teams currently reside in their original city or state anymore(with both Cincinnati and Oakland being displaced twice apiece since joining the league) all but two franchises(Miami and Baltimore) have won at least one conference championship while representing their current city. The Buffalo Bills are currently tied with New England for having appeared in an NFL-record eleven consecutive conference championship games(from 1990-2000).

National Football Conference

The National Football Conference (NFC) is one of the two conferences of the National Football League (NFL), the highest professional level of American football in the United States. This conference and its counterpart, the American Football Conference (AFC), currently contain 16 teams each, making up a total of 32 clubs in the NFL.

NFC teams are spread across the United States; its teams play in all four time zones. The NFC is generally considered to be stronger than the AFC, especially since the turn of the millennium; out of 21 Super Bowls played since then, 13 have been won by NFC teams and 8 by AFC teams.
