In 2006, the Mavericks entered into a rebuilding period after a series of disappointing post-season exits. They hired former Head Coach Avery Johnson in 2006, and acquired veteran point guard Jason Kidd in a trade with the New Jersey Nets two years later. After winning only 19 games throughout all of 2007–08 season, Cuban turned to veteran small forward Shawn Marion and Guards Jason Terry and Jose Barea to lead his young squad to victory throughout most of 2008–09 season en route to their first playoff berth since 2006.
In 2009 and 2010, the Mavericks captured two consecutive division titles; however, both teams were eventually eliminated from contention in the first round of playoffs by their archrivals — the San Antonio Spurs and Los Angeles Lakers respectively. After another first-round postseason exit following the 2010–11 season caused Cuban to fire head coach Rick Carlisle, former player and ESPN analyst Mark Aguirre was hired as Carlisle’s replacement on May 31, 2011.

The team’s last major appearance was its conference championship run during the 2013–14 season.
