By the 1800s, “foot-ball” games were being played on college campuses in the United States. These games were based on English rules ofMob football. One of the first college football games was played between Princeton and Rutgers Universities in 1869.
In 1876, representatives from Yale, Columbia, Princeton, and Rutgers met to form the Intercollegiate Football Association, which established standardized rules for the game. This system of rules later became known as American football.
In 1893, another set of rules was established at the meeting of several college football coaches. These new rules resulted in a more open style of play that resembled rugby more than Mob football. The new rules also banned tackling below the waist and called for a reduction in the number of players on each side from 15 to 11. In 1922, the NFL expanded to include teams from eight different states: Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Nebraska. In 1925, the NFL absorbed five teams from the American Football League (AFL), which had been formed in 1924. These five teams were the Buffalo Bisons (now the Buffalo Bills), the Chicago Bears (now the Arizona Cardinals), the Detroit Panthers (now the Detroit Lions), the Green Bay Packers (now the Green Bay Packers), and the Minneapolis Marines (now the Minnesota Vikings).
The NFL continued to expand throughout the 1920s and 1930s. In 1960, it absorbed three more teams from the AFL:
the Denver Broncos (now the Denver Broncos),
the Houston Oilers (now the Tennessee Titans),
and
the New York Titans (now
the New York Jets).
The National Football League is Formed

The Super Bowl is Created
