These Divisional Playoffs are followed by Conference Championship games, with only one club per conference advancing to play in Super Bowl – considered professional American football’s biggest annual single-day event.

It was only until after NFL owners had approved a plan to merge with AFL owners at their May 20 meeting did both circuits announced their merger agreement. The oakland raiders were one team who did not want to be apart of this new found league feeling that they were “too good” for this new league.
In August 1969, Rozelle was quoted as saying “We’re not looking to destroy anything”, when asked about a potential merger between hisleague(NFL) with the newer American Football League(AFL), but also added “We’re looking for an arrangement that’s good for us”.By 1970, it became apparent that both leagues were eager for a merger deal totake effect forthe 1971 season; however there were stilla number o f issues totacklebefore an agreement couldbe finalized—namely whichleague’s personnelwould populate thenewly mergedleagueand howwould these playersbe dividedup among thenewteams?
