The Teams

In the NFL today, there are a total of 32 teams. These teams are divided into two groups, the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC). Each conference is then divided into four divisions, North, South, East, and West. Here is a list of the teams in each division.

AFC East: Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, New York Jets

The Bills, Dolphins, Patriots, and Jets make up the AFC East.

The Bills had a rough season in 2020, but they finished with a record of 13-3. They made it to the AFC Championship game, but lost to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Dolphins finished the 2020 season with a record of 10-6. They made it to the playoffs as a wild card team, but lost to the Baltimore Ravens in the wild card round.

The Patriots had a down year in 2020, finishing with a record of 7-9. They failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 2008.

The Jets finished the 2020 season with a record of 2-14. They fired their head coach midway through the season and struggled mightily throughout.

AFC North: Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers

The Broncos are the most successful team in the division, having won eight AFC Championships and three Super Bowls. The Chiefs have won two Super Bowls, while the Raiders have won one. The Chargers have yet to win a Super Bowl, but they did make it to the AFC Championship game in 1994.

The AFC West is one of the most competitive divisions in the NFL, and all four teams are always in contention for a playoff spot.

Rutgers won that initial contest by a score of six runs to Princeton’s four. James F. Bates was the referee for that historic game. Walter Camp, who would later be known as the “Father of American Football,” played on Yale University’s first football team in 1868. Princeton and Rutgers both used 25 players in that game, a number that would eventually be reduced to 11 players per team.

The First Professional Team (1884)

On November 12, 1892, representatives from four Midwest teams — the Allegheny Athletic Association, the Pittsburgh Athletic Club, the Allegheny Athletic Association of Wheeling and the Reflex Athletic Association of Canton — met in Pittsburgh to form the first professional football team. The Allegheny Athletic Association was founded in 1870 and fielded the first openly professional team in 1884. The other three teams were founded in 1890. The Pittsburgh Athletic Club professionalism in 1890.
The Allegheny Athletic Association is considered by many to be the first professional football team. The founder, O.D. Thompson, made it clear that he would pay his players $500 for each game they won and $250 for each tie game played. This made them the first team to pay their players for their services.

The First League (1888)

In 1888, Pudge Heffelfinger was paid $500 by the Allegheny Athletic Association to play in a game against the Pittsburgh Athletic Club, becoming the first professional football player.

The First Championship Game (1920)

The first official NFL game was played on October 3, 1920, when the Allegheny Athletic Association defeated the Pittsburgh Athletic Club, 7-3.

In August of 1920, several team representatives met to discuss the formation of a professional football league. The American Professional Football Association was formed, and the first championship game was scheduled for Thanksgiving Day of that year. The championship game pits the first-place team against the second-place team (determined by a win-loss record), and the winner is awarded the title of “NFL Champion”.

The first championship game featured The Decatur Staleys (now the Chicago Bears) against The Chicago Cardinals (now the Arizona Cardinals). The Staleys won, 10-7.

The First Super Bowl (1967)

The First Super Bowl was played on January 15, 1967. The NFL champions Green Bay Packers (13-1) faced off against the AFL champions Kansas City Chiefs (11-2-1).

The Packers were led by quarterback Bart Starr, running back Elijah Pitts, and receiver Carroll Dale. The Chiefs were led by Quarterback Len Dawson, running backs Mike Garrett and Bert Coan, receiver Otis Taylor, and tight end Fred Arbanas.

The game was a close one, with the Packers winning by a score of 35-10. Bart Starr was named the MVP of the game.

The Teams

The NFL today is made up of 32 teams. These teams are split into two conferences, the AFC and NFC. Each conference has four divisions made up of four teams each.

The teams in each division play each other twice a year, once at their home stadium and once at the home stadium of their opponents. In addition to these games, each team plays every team in their conference that they did not face in their division once. This makes for a total of 16 regular season games.

At the end of the regular season, the playoffs begin. The playoffs are a single elimination tournament consisting of six rounds. The six teams with the best record in each conference make the playoffs as well as two wildcard teams per conference (the two teams with the best records that did not win their division).

In the first round of the playoffs, known as the Wildcard round, the three division winners in each conference are seeded first through third and given a bye to the second round while the fourth seed hosts the fifth seed and the sixth seed hosts the third seed. The winners of these games then advance to play one of the divisional seeds in round two.

The second round of the playoffs is known as Divisional weekend where the remaining division winner that had a bye hosts whichever team advanced from Wildcard weekend with the lowest seed remaining while another game is played between whichever two teams advanced from Wildcard weekend with higher seeds remaining. The winners from these games then advance to Championship weekend where they play for a spot in Super Bowl LIII which will be played on Sunday, February 3rd, 2019 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.
