The Detroit Lions have been playing on Thanksgiving since 1934, making them the longest-tenured Thanksgiving Day game host in the NFL. The Lions have played on Thanksgiving every year since 1946, with the exception of 1999, when a scheduling conflict forced them to play their annual Thanksgiving game on Saturday, November 27.
The Lions have had mixed success over the years on Turkey Day, compiling a overall record of 63-37-2. They’ve won three Thanksgiving Day games in a row (2016-2018), but prior to that, they had lost eight straight dating back to 2003.
The Lions will host the Chicago Bears on Thanksgiving this year, marking the fifth time the two teams have met on the holiday (1934, 1939, 1994, 2004). The Lions currently hold a 2-2 record against the Bears on Thanksgiving.
Green Bay Packers
On Thanksgiving Day in 1920, the first NFL game was played between the Chicago Bears and the Decatur Staleys, which would later be renamed the Chicago Bears. The Green Bay Packers weren’t founded until August 11, 1921, so they didn’t play in that first Thanksgiving Day game. In fact, the Packers didn’t play on Thanksgiving Day until 1929, when they lost to the New York Giants 26-0.
The Packers have played on Thanksgiving Day a total of 33 times (including this year), and they have a record of 20-12-1. This doesn’t include two playoff games that were also played on Thanksgiving, which the Packers won both times. The Packers’ first Thanksgiving Day victory came in 1930, when they defeated the Detroit Lions 14-0.
This year will be the 34th time that the Packers have played on Thanksgiving Day, and they will be taking on the Detroit Lions. The Lions are one of three teams that have played on every Thanksgiving Day since 1934 (the other two are the Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins).
Miami Dolphins
The Dolphins play the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving this year. The game will be played at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. This is the first time the Dolphins have played on Thanksgiving since 2009, when they lost to the Cowboys in Miami.
