The National Football Conference

The National Football Conference (NFC) is one of the two conferences of the National Football League (NFL), the largest professional American football league. This conference and its counterpart, the American Football Conference (AFC), currently contain 16 teams each, making up the 32 teams of the NFL.

The NFC was created on June 4, 1970, following the merger of the AFL and NFL, and Their champion determines the winner of the NFC Championship Game, which is held at a pre-selected site during one of the final two weekends in January. This game is played at a neutral venue selected three to six weeks prior to Sunday’s game; hence, there are no permanent home sites for either team during this championship round. The first such game was held on January 10, 1971 at Texas Stadium in Irving, Texas; it featured the Dallas Cowboys defeating the Minnesota Vikings by a score of 23 – 6 en route to their first Super Bowl appearance.
