The NFL is the National Football League, the highest level of professional American football. It was founded in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association, and changed its name to the National Football League in 1922. The NFL is made up of 32 teams, divided equally between the National Football Conference and the American Football Conference. Each conference has 16 teams, and each team plays a 16-game schedule. The NFL playoffs are held after the regular season ends, with 12 teams qualifying for the playoffs: four from each conference. The playoffs culminate in the Super Bowl, which is held every year in February and pits the champions of each conference against each other.
