Thursday Night Football

Thursday Night Football is the branding used for broadcasts of National Football League (NFL) games that typically occur on Thursday evenings. Most of the games kick off at 8:20 p.m. Eastern time, but some have started at 8:00 p.m., 7:30 p.m., or 6:00 p.m. Thursday Night Football first aired on November 23, 2006 on NFL Network with its inaugural game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Denver Broncos, which the Chiefs won 19–10.[1] Thursday Night Football has continued every week since, except for two weeks in 2015 when it was replaced by Saturday games during Week 16 and Week 17 of that year due to scheduling conflicts with Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve falling on a Thursday night.

From 2006 to 2011, NFL Network aired 19 regular season games exclusively each season; in 2012, 33 games were broadcast—24 exclusively and 9 simulcast on local television networks as part of a new NFL policy to expand their cable coverage to more markets.[2][3][4] In addition, two late-season games were broadcast on Friday nights in primetime during Weeks 15 and 16; these broadcasts were not branded as Thursday Night Football but generally had similar levels of promotion by both NFL Network and the participating teams (through local broadcasting arrangements) as regular-season TNF broadcasts. The biggest change mostly had to do with intros/outros as they now featured graphics promoting other NBCUniversal programming (mostly USA Network series during this time) while Sunday Night Football had other cross-promotions within NBC.[5]

For four seasons beginning in 2014, CBS obtained the rights to carry all TNF games simulcast on their main network as well as their sports cable channel CBS Sports Network (CBSSN);[6][7][8] production values and talent for these telecasts were shared between CBS and NFL Network staffs.[9] In 2015, NBC obtained the exclusive rights to televise all TNF games;[10][11] as with CBS/NFLN TNF coverage from 2014 to 2017, production values and talent are shared between both networks (although NBC uses an altered version of their Sunday Night Football graphics package for these broadcasts). All TNF games are also carried live online via Verizon’s NFL Mobile app and Verizon’sgo90 video service (although access via these services is restricted to Verizon customers only).[12][13] While most TNF matchups feature 2 teams coming off 10 days rest since their most recent game (as per standard rest for NFL players), there are several exceptions throughout the season where teams play a TNF game coming off only 4 days rest from playing their previous game on a Sunday; a similar situation occurs once per season when one team is coming off its bye week while its opponent is playing its second consecutive TNF game in said scenario.[14]=
