When do the NFL playoffs start?
The NFL playoffs are a single-elimination tournament held after the regular season to determine the National Football League (NFL) champion. Six teams from each of the league’s two conferences qualify for the playoffs. Even though seedings are used to fairly match up the teams, depending on when a team earned its playoff berth (i.e., by winning its division or by having a Wild Card berth), it is possible for two division rivals to meet in the conference semifinals, or even in the conference championship game.
The playoffs begin on Wild Card Weekend, when all four wild card teams play. The winners advance to Divisional Playoff Weekend, when they face off against the top seeds in their respective conferences. The divisional playoff winners then advance to their respective conference championship games, with the winners ultimately advancing to Super Bowl Sunday, when they compete for the Lombardi Trophy and the title of NFL champion.

This led to the first ever AFL-NFL World Championship Game, which was later called Super Bowl I and was held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
What teams are in the NFL playoffs?
The NFL playoffs are a single-elimination tournament held after the regular season to determine the NFL champion. From 1933 to 1966, the NFL postseason generally only consisted of the NFL Championship Game, pitting the league’s two division winners (who nominally met in a best-of-three series of games). Since 1967, when the NFL merged with the American Football League (AFL), the league has used a four-team bracket to determine its champion.
Currently, only four teams qualify for the tournament. However, this may increase to seven teams in future seasons, as a proposed expansion plan would give a first-round bye to the team with the best record in each conference. The four qualifiers from each conference are then seeded according to their overall won-loss record, with the division winners always receiving seeds 1 and 2.
The first round of the playoffs is commonly referred to as “wild card weekend”, as it features two games in each conference between lower-seeded teams that nevertheless qualified for postseason play. In each conference, only one team receives a bye in this round—the team with the best regular-season record among all remaining playoff contenders. The two wild card teams in each conference then play each other in the opening weekend of the playoffs.
The winners of those Wild Card games advance to play against one of the top three seeds in their respective conferences (who all received byes into this round) in what is popularly known as “Divisional Playoffs weekend”. The Divisional Playoffs consist solely of intra-conference matchups, pitting one division winner against another. The two surviving teams from Divisional Playoff weekend then meet in their respective conference’s championship game—the AFC Championship Game for those clubs belonging to that Conference who qualified via winning their respective AFC divisions; and likewise for those clubs belonging tothe NFC and that Conference’s divisions—with a berth in Super Bowl LII on line for those victorious clubs.
