The NFL History

The National Football League (NFL) is a professional American football league. It was founded in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association (APFA) before renaming itself as the National Football League for the 1922 season. The NFL is the highest professional level of American football in the world.

The Inception of the NFL

In 1920, the country was abuzz with the start of a new professional football league. The American Professional Football Association was formed in Canton, Ohio on September 17th of that year. The League got off to a slow start, as only four teams competed in its first season. But by 1922, the APFA had rebranded as the National Football League and had grown to 22 teams.

The early days of the NFL were defined by two rivalries: The New York Giants and the Green Bay Packers. These two teams dominated the League in its early years, winning a combined six championships between them in the 1920s. But it was the Packers who truly set themselves apart, becoming the first team to win three consecutive titles from 1929 to 1931.

The First Game

The first NFL game was between the Pittsburgh Alleghenys and the Philadelphia Athltics in 1892. The Alleghenys won the game 6-0.

The First Season

The National Football League (NFL) was founded in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association (APFA) before renaming itself the National Football League for the 1922 season. The NFL consisited of 14 teams in its first season which were all located in cities with population of 75,000 or more. Two of these teams still exist today, the Chicago Cardinals (now Arizona Cardinals) and the Decatur Staleys (now Chicago Bears). The first NFL game was played on October 3, 1920 between the Staleys and the Cardinals at Normal Field on the campus of Normal University (now known as Illinois State University) with the Staleys winning 39-0.

The Current Standings

The NFL’s 17-week regular season runs from early September to late December, with each team playing 16 games and having one bye week.
