Tonight’s Games

The National Hockey League (NHL) is a professional ice hockey league in North America, currently comprising 31 teams: 24 in the United States and 7 in Canada. The NHL is considered to be the premier professional ice hockey league in the world, and one of the major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada. The Stanley Cup, the oldest professional sports trophy in North America, is awarded annually to the league playoff champion at the end of each season.

NHL games are played on a rectangular hockey rink measuring 200 feet (61 m) by 85 feet (26 m). There are blue lines at each end of the rink, beyond which are two red goals, each guarded by a goaltender who tries to stop shots from entering it; this area is referred to as the defensive zone. In front of each goal is an area called the crease; only goaltenders are allowed to enter this area to play the puck or defend against incoming shooters. Near each blue line is a red line that delineates one of five face-off areas; when play starts from a stoppage of play, it is at one of these face-off spots.

Each team has six players on the ice at all times: three forwards (the left wing, center, and right wing), two defensemen (the left defenseman and right defenseman), and one goaltender. The left wing and right wing are positioned near the sideboards on either side of face-off circle; they primarily stay near their own blueline in their team’s defensive zone during play, though they can choose to skate into the offensive zone or closer to their goaltender for certain plays. The center faces off against opponents’ centers for most face-offs; he also generally handles the puck more than any other player on his team during even-strength play since he usually must maintain communication with both wingers as well as his fellow defensemen while on offense or defense. The defenseman’s primary responsibility is to defend their own blueline by stopping opponents from taking shots on goal and from gaining access to dangerous areas near their net; however, they will also occasionally contribute offensively themselves with hard slapshots from beyond the opponent’s blueline or by playing short passes (“breakouts”) out of their team’s defensive zone to start odd-man rushes into attacking position. The goaltender’s main job is obviously to try and stop any pucks that manage to get past his teammates and make it onto net; he may direct his teammates where he wants them positioned using hand signals when he has control of the puck within his own goaltender crease while there is no stoppage in play.
