Roster
The Cincinnati Bengals are a professional American football team based in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Bengals compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) North division. Their home stadium is Paul Brown Stadium in downtown Cincinnati.
The Bengals were founded in 1966 as a member of the American Football League (AFL) by former Cleveland Browns head coach Paul Brown. Brown was the Bengals’ head coach from their inception to 1975. After being dismissed as the Browns’ head coach by Art Modell in January 1963, Brown had shown interest in establishing another NFL franchise in Ohio and looked at both Columbus and Cincinnati as potential sites. Cincinnati mayor James Tobin realized that a new stadium would be critical for a professional sports team to be viable in the city and pushed for its construction. Matt Snell was the first overall pick for the New York Jets and Don Shula was later hired as head coach, leading them to an AFL Championship rematch with their intrastate rivals, the Browns, who were now coached by Brown himself. The Bengals lost to the Browns 27–7 and failed to win either of their two divisional playoff games despite having a better record than both playoff teams. quarterbacks Virgil Carter and Ken Anderson continued to lead Cincinnati’s offense while Bob Johnson became one of their key running backs during these early years.
In 1968, after four winless seasons, Paul Brown was fired as head coach by owner and general manager Mike Brown; his son, Paul T., took over ownership of the team upon his father’s death later that year. In 1970, Shuta led them to an 8–6 record—their first winning season since 1968—and their first playoff appearance since 1969; they defeated the Buffalo Bills 31–21 before losing at home to eventual champion Baltimore Colts 27–17 in AFC divisional playoffs. Marvin Lewis was hired on January 14, 2003 as head leader of the Cincinnati Bengals franchise; he remains with them today winning AFC north three years out his tenure so far (2005-06-09).
