In 1926, John Cavanagh bought the U.S. Rubber Company’s shoe manufacturing business and took over production of Keds shoes; however, due to market saturation and changes in fashion, sales lagged through most of the 1930s and 1940s.[citation needed] In 1942 U.S Rubber retooled its Keds introductions to produce low cut canvas tops in trendy colors with spirit gum rubber soles designed to grip on any surface to help meet wartime needs.[citation needed] Keds sponsored national champ Dorothy Hamill in 1976 and endorsed tennis player Arthur Ashe in 1983; by 1985 one out of every four tennis shoes sold was a Ked.[citation needed]

In 1949, Pro-Keds were introduced as a line of sneakers designed specifically for basketball players; Pro-Keds were endorsed by George Mikan that same year.[1][2] Pro-Keds were intended to compete with Converse’s All Star basketball shoe; they quickly became popular with professional athletes and amateurs alike.[3][4][5] The original Pro-Keds shoe was lace-up with a simple rubber sole made to look like an alligator skin pattern; it was available in black or white.[6][7][8] Over the years Pro-Keds’ basic style changed very little; however the company introduced many different styles of shoes including athletic shoes, canvas casual shoes (such as deck shoes), boots and sandals.
