NHL Awards

The National Hockey League hands out many awards each season. These awards are voted on by the media, coaches, and general managers. Awards are given to the best players, coaches, and teams in the NHL. Awards are also given to the worst players and teams in the NHL.

Hart Memorial Trophy

The Hart Memorial Trophy is awarded annually to the “player judged most valuable to his team.” The winner is selected by a poll of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association at the end of the regular season.

Vezina Trophy

The Vezina Trophy is awarded annually to the National Hockey League’s (NHL) best goaltender as voted on by the general managers of all NHL clubs. It is named in honor of Georges Vezina, goaltender of the Montreal Canadiens from 1910 until 1925, who died in 1926 of tuberculosis. The trophy was first awarded at the end of the 1926–27 NHL season and was awarded to Georges Vezina’s widow, where it remained until 1947. It was then shared between the NHL and NHLPA in 1947, and solely became a NHL award again in 2010.

Calder Memorial Trophy

The Calder Memorial Trophy is an annual award given to the player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition in the National Hockey League (NHL). It is named after Frank Calder, the first president of the NHL. Players who are 25 years of age or younger as of October 1 of their rookie season are eligible for the award, making it one of the few awards that recognize young players.

The trophy is made out of sterling silver, showering an 18-karat gold coating. It measures 20 inches by 13.5 inches and weighs 34 pounds. The winner receives a replica that is 8.5 inches by 11 inches which they can keep for themselves. The original trophy itself remains in the possession of the NHL, and each year it goes on a tour across North America so fans can see it.

Voting for the Calder Memorial Trophy is conducted by members of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association at the conclusion of each regular season, and each individual voter lists their top five candidates on a 10-7-5-3-1 point basis. Three finalists are named and winners receive 125 points, with second place receiving 75 points and third place receiving 50 points. In 2010–11, because there was a tie for both second and third place, both received 73 points instead.

Post-season statistics
