The National Basketball Association (NBA) is a professional basketball league in North America. The NBA was founded in 1946 as the Basketball Association of America (BAA). The BAA was formed by owners of the major ice hockey arenas in the Northeastern and Midwestern United States and Canada. On August 3, 1949, the BAA agreed to merge with the National Basketball League (NBL) to form the NBA. The league’s first president was Maurice Podoloff of the Hartford Civic Center. The league began with eleven teams, and through a series of expansions, reductions, relocations and mergers it currently consists of 30 teams.
The Early Years of the NBA
In the early 1900s, basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith. He created the game as an indoor activity for his students at a YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts. Shortly after, the game started to gain popularity across the United States.
In 1946, the Basketball Association of America (BAA) was formed. The BAA was the first professional basketball league in America. The league consisted of 11 teams, all located in cities on the East Coast. In 1949, the BAA merged with another professional basketball league called the National Basketball League (NBL). The newly-merged league was called the National Basketball Association (NBA).
The NBA has come a long way since its early days. It now consists of 30 teams located all across America, from Los Angeles to Atlanta. The NBA is one of the most popular sports leagues in the world, with millions of fans tuning in to watch games every year.
The First NBA Team
The first team to ever be in the NBA was the Boston Celtics. The Celtics were founded in 1946, and they are currently the most successful team in NBA history. The Celtics have won a total of seventeen championships, which is more than any other team in the NBA.
The Boston Celtics
The Boston Celtics were founded in 1946 as one of the original eight NBA teams. The franchise is owned by Fenway Sports Group, which also owns Liverpool F.C. of the English Premier League. The Celtics play their home games at TD Garden, which they share with the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League (NHL).
The Celtics are one of the most successful teams in NBA history; they have won the league championship a record 17 times, including eight consecutive wins from 1959 to 1966, and have appeared in 21 NBA Finals, more than any other team in the league. They have played more games and won more championships than any other NBA franchise.
The team’s name “celtics” has no connection with Celtic culture or anything related to Britain as some might expect, but rather was chosen by Boston Globe columnist Bill Russell while on a road trip with Arthur Daley – then sports editor for the New York Daily News – and several other friends during the winter of 1945–46.

The Los Angeles Lakers are an American professional basketball team based in Los Angeles, California. The Lakers are one of the most successful teams in the history of the NBA, having won 16 NBA championships, their last being in 2010.
