Fournette was considered one of the best running backs in his class coming out of high school, and committed to LSU over offers from Alabama, Auburn, and many other schools. As a freshman at LSU in 2014, he set school records for most rushing yards in a game and a season by a freshman. He helped lead LSU to an 8-5 record and a victory in the 2015 bowl game. In 2015 Fournette had 1,953 rushing yards breaking Herschel Walker’s Southeastern Conference (SEC) record for most rushing yards in a season by a sophomore and finished 6th place in Heisman Trophy voting. After an injury-plagued junior year where he only played seven games, he decided to forgo his senior year and declare for the draft.
College career
During his college career, Fournette was considered one of the best running backs in the nation. As a freshman in 2014, he rushed for 1,034 yards and 10 touchdowns and was named to the SEC All-Freshman team. He followed that up with an even better sophomore season, rushing for 1,953 yards and 22 touchdowns while earning first-team All-SEC and second-team All-American honors.
Fournette entered his junior season as one of the favorites to win the Heisman Trophy, but he was limited by injuries and ended up rushing for just 843 yards and eight touchdowns. He still managed to earn first-team All-SEC honors for the third straight year.
After much discussion, Fournette decided to forgo his senior season and declare for the NFL Draft. He was selected fourth overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2017 NFL Draft.
