In 1952, McMahon and Mondt founded Capitol Wrestling Corporation (CWC), which McMahon bought Mondt out of in 1953. The CWC began running multiple pro wrestling shows throughout New England from 1953 onward. In 1963, McMahon & Mondt split CWC and formed their own company called the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF).
The WWWF established itself as one of the premier pro wrestling promotions in North America by creating several iconic wrestlers, such as Bruno Sammartino (quoted as saying that he “made [McMahon] a millionaire”), Gorilla Monsoon, Pedro Morales, Cookie Monster (Big John Studd), Ernie Ladd, George Steele, Viagra (Andre the Giant), Superstar Billy Graham, Muhammad Ali, Nikolai Volkoff, The Iron Sheik, Hulk Hogan, King Kong Bundy) Cyndi Lauper (“Rowdy” Roddy Piper), Mr. T; Hollywood Hulk Hogan
The 1980s saw considerable changes in WWE’s business model. In 1982, Vince McMahon Jr., who had recently taken over his father’s company after his retirement , expanded WWE’s reach nationally by purchasing Georgia Championship Wrestling (GCW) and its vast television distribution network for $800 thousand . This allowed McMahon to promote his product across a much wider area without having to deal with other promoters booking wrestlers for him .
Further expansion occurred in 1985 when McMahon purchased Majority ownership shares of Capital Wrestling Corporation from his father . This gave him control over not only WWWF/WWF but also AWA Superstars of Wrestling , Verne Gagne ‘s advice which helped him learn how to book shows . Also that year he purchased World Class Championship Wrestling (WCCW) from Texas promoter Fritz Von Erich , giving him another large territory to expand into .
By 1987 , with expansion still occurring but at a much slower rate than before due largely because of the much more secure grip that McMahon had on both WWF and pro wrestling as a whole thanks to his purchasing other key promotions and talent , WWE was running close to 400 live events per year but only attracting around 1 million pay-per-view buys total.

After the WBF folded in early 1992, Monsoon returned to WWE (then known as WWF) as a commentator. He remained with WWE until his death in 1999.
