Who Was The Worst NBA Player Ever?
Contents
It’s a controversial question, but we’re going to take a stab at it. Here is our list of the worst NBA players ever.
Steve Francis
Steve Francis was a terrible basketball player. He was drafted second overall in the 1999 NBA draft, but he only played for four teams in his career and was out of the league by 2008. He was a total bust, and many people consider him to be the worst player in NBA history.
Drafted by the Vancouver Grizzlies
In the 1999 NBA draft, Francis was selected second overall by the Vancouver Grizzlies. He was then traded to the Houston Rockets in a blockbuster deal involving six players and three teams. The Rockets had originally drafted Francis’ University of Maryland teammate, Johnny Rhodes, with the 11th pick, but immediately traded him to Vancouver as part of the Francis deal.
Traded to the Houston Rockets
On June 24, 1999, Francis was drafted by the Vancouver Grizzlies as the second overall pick in the 1999 NBA draft. In his rookie season, he was selected to the All-Rookie First Team and earned Rookie of the Year honors after averaging 18.0 points, 5.3 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 1.94 steals per game. He was also awarded the NBA Rookie Challenge MVP that year. After one season with Vancouver, Francis was traded to the Houston Rockets on July 18, 2000 in a blockbuster 11-player deal involving five teams and three draft picks.
Three-time NBA All-Star
Steve Francis was a three-time NBA All-Star who played for the Houston Rockets, Orlando Magic, and New York Knicks. He is widely considered to be one of the worst NBA players of all time. In his 12-year career, Francis averaged only 10.5 points per game and was plagued by injuries. He is also infamous for refusing to play for the Knicks when they acquired him in a trade with the Rockets.
Kwame Brown
Kwame Brown was the number one pick in the 2001 NBA draft. He was drafted by the Washington Wizards. He is widely considered to be the worst number one pick in NBA history. He only averaged 4.5 points per game and 3.5 rebounds per game in his NBA career.
Drafted by the Washington Wizards
In 2001, the Washington Wizards drafted Kwame Brown with the first overall pick in the NBA draft. Brown was just 19 years old, making him the first player ever to be drafted straight out of high school with the first pick.
Many experts thought that Brown would be a bust, and they were right. He averaged just 4.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game during his rookie season, and he was never able to improve much beyond that. In 2006, he was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in a package for All-Star center Pau Gasol, but he didn’t fare any better in Los Angeles. He was out of the league entirely by 2009.
In hindsight, drafting Kwame Brown was a colossal mistake by the Washington Wizards. He is widely considered to be one of the biggest draft busts in NBA history.
Traded to the Los Angeles Lakers
The Washington Wizards used the first pick of the 2001 NBA draft to select power forward Kwame Brown from Glynn Academy in Georgia. He became the first high school player to be drafted with the top pick. The Lakers traded for Brown in 2005, and he played for them until he was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in 2008. He also played for the Charlotte Bobcats, Detroit Pistons andGolden State Warriors. Brown was considered a bust as an NBA player, and he was nicknamed “the worst draft pick in NBA history.”
One-time NBA All-Star
Kwame Brown was the first overall pick in the 2001 NBA draft by the Washington Wizards. He was drafted straight out of high school, which was highly unusual at the time. Brown only played two seasons for the Wizards before he was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. He had a brief stint with the Lakers before he was traded again, this time to the Memphis Grizzlies. He also played for the Charlotte Bobcats and Philadelphia 76ers before his career came to an end in 2013.
Brown was never able to live up to his potential and is widely considered to be one of the worst NBA players ever. He is also one of only a handful of players to have been drafted first overall and not make an All-Star team at least once in their career.
Darko Milicic
Darko Milicic was drafted 2nd overall in the 2003 NBA Draft. He was drafted ahead of guys like Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh. He is widely considered to be one of the worst top-5 picks in NBA history. He bounced around the league for a few years before eventually going back to Europe to play basketball.
Drafted by the Detroit Pistons
Darko Milicic was born in Yugoslavia in 1985, and he was drafted by the Detroit Pistons with the second overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft.
He is widely considered to be one of the worst draft busts in NBA history, as he averaged just 6.0 points and 4.2 rebounds per game during his NBA career.
He played for six different teams during his short-lived NBA career, and he was out of the league by 2012.
Traded to the Orlando Magic
On June 28, 2003, the Detroit Pistons traded Milicic, Keith Bogans, and Melvin Ely to the Orlando Magic for a future first-round pick (that became J. R. Smith). During his time with the Magic, Milicic averaged 6 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. He was later traded to the Memphis Grizzlies.
One-time NBA All-Star
In his prime, Darko Milicic was one of the most talented basketball players in the world. A 7-footer from Serbia, he was a gifted shot-blocker and rebounder with a soft touch around the basket. He was selected with the second overall pick in the 2003 NBA draft by the Detroit Pistons, ahead of future All-Stars Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh.
However, Milicic never lived up to his potential in the NBA. He averaged just 6.0 points and 4.2 rebounds per game over the course of his 10-year career, spending time with seven different teams. He was out of the league entirely by 2013, at just 28 years old.
Given his lack of production on the court, it’s no surprise that Milicic is widely considered to be one of the worst draft busts in NBA history.
