We all know that certain numbers in the NBA are retired to honor some of the greatest players to ever play the game. But did you know that there are currently no players in the NBA who wear the number 5? Here’s a look at the history of the number 5 in the NBA and some of the greats who have worn it.

Ben Wallace

Ben Wallace, who was born on September 10, 1974, is a professional basketball player who plays for the Chicago Bulls in the NBA. He is 6’9″ and weighs 251 pounds. Wallace was drafted by the Washington Bullets in 1996 and has played for the Bullets/Wizards, Detroit Pistons, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Phoenix Suns.

Benjamin Roy “Ben” Wallace (born September 10, 1974) is an American former professional basketball player. A native of Alabama, he played college basketball at Cuyahoga Community College and Virginia Union University and was not selected in the 1996 NBA draft. In his NBA career, Wallace played with the Washington Bullets/Wizards (1996–2000), Orlando Magic (2000–2001), Detroit Pistons (2001–2006, 2009–2012), Chicago Bulls (2006–2008) and Cleveland Cavaliers (2008–2009). Though relatively short for a professional basketball player, he is noted for his tenacious defense and shot-blocking ability, leading the league in blocks per game four times.

In 2006, Wallace was jettisoned by the Pistons amid deteriorating relationships with teammates Rasheed Wallace and Richard Hamilton. He signed a four-year deal worth $60 million with the Chicago Bulls as a free agent that summer; however, he was traded back to Cleveland in exchange for forward/center Larry Hughes midway through his sole season with Chicago. After one season with the Cavaliers, he rejoined the Pistons for two additional seasons before retiring from professional basketball in 2016.

He won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award four times, a record he shares with Dikembe Mutombo. In nine seasons with the Pistons, Wallace made two NBA Finals appearances (2004 and 2005), winning a championship with the Pistons in 2004.

The 6-foot-9-inch (2.06 m) Wallace averages more than 13 rebounds per game in his career, ranking him 20th all time in rebound average and 11th all time in total rebounding. He is recognized as one of the best defensive players of his era. His nickname is “Big Ben”.

Dennis Rodman is a former NBA player who is most well-known for his time with the Chicago Bulls. He is a five-time NBA champion and was named one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History. Rodman wore the number 5 during his time with the Bulls.

After a brief spell with the San Antonio Spurs, Rodman returned to the Pistons in 1995 and won another NBA title in 1996. He retired from basketball in 2006 after a final season with the Chicago Bulls.

San Antonio Spurs

Dennis Rodman played for the San Antonio Spurs from 1993 to 1995. In his two seasons with the team, he averaged 13.1 points and 12.5 rebounds per game. He helped the Spurs win the NBA Championship in 1995.

Scottie Pippen

Scottie Pippen, who wore number 5 during his NBA career, is one of the most iconic players in the history of the league. Pippen was a 6’8″ small forward who played an important role on the Chicago Bulls teams that won six NBA championships in the 1990s. Pippen was known for his versatile all-around game, which made him one of the best players in the NBA.

Scottie Pippen was born on September 25, 1965, in Hamburg, Arkansas. The 6-foot-8 small forward played collegiately at the University of Central Arkansas, where he was a two-time All-American. Pippen was selected by the Seattle SuperSonics with the fifth overall pick of the 1987 NBA draft but was immediately traded to the Chicago Bulls for Olden Polynice and cash considerations.

Pippen teamed with fellow superstar Michael Jordan to form one of the most formidable duos in NBA history. The two forwards helped lead the Bulls to six NBA championships between 1991 and 1998. A versatile player capable of excelling at both ends of the court, Pippen was a seven-time All-Star and a member of the NBA All-Defensive First Team on eight occasions. He was also named one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History in 1996.

Pippen’s jersey (#33) was retired by the Bulls in 2005, and he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010.

Houston Rockets

The Rockets originally intended to retire Pippen’s jersey number (#33) in 2005, but due to the ongoing legal dispute between Pippen and the Rockets organization, the team instead honored Pippen by unveiling a plaque with his accomplishments in Toyota Center’s “Rocket Power” display. In 2010, after the legal dispute had been resolved, the Rockets announced their intention to finally retire Pippen’s jersey. On December 9, 2011, before a game against the Chicago Bulls, Pippen’s jersey was retired by the Houston Rockets.

The Philadelphia 76ers selected Bryant with the 13th overall pick in the 1996 NBA draft. As a rookie, he played limited minutes, averaging just under 15 minutes per game. Kobe saw an uptick in production during his second season, averaging nearly 26 minutes per game and increasing his scoring average to 7.6 points per game.
