The National Football League MVP award is one of the most prestigious awards in all of American sports.
Who will be crowned the 2021 NFL MVP?
Stay tuned to find out!
Tom Brady
Tom Brady, who is the current quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is a strong candidate for NFL MVP 2021. He has led his team to an 8-4 record and has thrown for 4,002 yards and 28 touchdowns. Brady has also shown his ability to win games in the clutch, as evidenced by his come-from-behind win against the New Orleans Saints in Week 14.
Why he could win
Brady is the only player in NFL history to have won six Super Bowls, and he did it with three different teams. He’s also a three-time NFL MVP, and he’s led the league in passing yards four times. He’s still playing at an elite level at age 43, and he proved last season that he can still win without a star-studded supporting cast. Brady will have a chance to add to his legacy this season with a new team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and if he can lead them to a Super Bowl victory, he could cement his place as the greatest quarterback of all time.
Why he might not win
If the Buccaneers finish with a losing record, it’s hard to envision Brady taking home the MVP trophy. Even if they finish 8-8 and miss the playoffs, it would be a stretch to say Brady was the most valuable player in the league. The award usually goes to a player on a playoff team, and there are plenty of other candidates who will be on playoff squads.
Patrick Mahomes
Patrick Mahomes is an American football quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League (NFL). He was drafted by the Chiefs in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Taking over as the starter beginning in 2018, he led the team to a 12-4 record and a divisional playoff appearance. In 2019, he helped the Chiefs reach the Super Bowl for the first time in 50 years, and he was named the Super Bowl LIV Most Valuable Player (MVP) after leading them to a 31-20 victory over the San Francisco 49ers. In 2020, he led the Chiefs to their second consecutive Super Bowl appearance, becoming the first player in NFL history to appear in two Super Bowls in their first two years as a starter, and helped them win Super Bowl LV over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Why he could win
The case for Mahomes is pretty simple: he’s the best quarterback in the NFL. He makes plays that nobody else can make, and he does it with alarming regularity. If the Chiefs are going to repeat as Super Bowl champions, it’s going to be because Mahomes is leading the way.
There’s also the fact that Mahomes is coming off of a season in which he was hampered by an ankle injury. He still managed to put up great numbers, but there’s a sense that he wasn’t quite at his best. If he’s able to stay healthy this season, there’s a good chance that he puts up even better numbers and leads the Chiefs to another Super Bowl win.
So, yes, Mahomes is definitely a candidate for NFL MVP this season. He has all of the talent and ability in the world, and if he can stay healthy, he could be in for a truly special season.
Why he might not win
1. He’s missed games due to injury
2. The Chiefs had a down year relative to their 2019 season
3. He didn’t play as well as he did in 2019
Russell Wilson
Wilson has been one of the most consistent performers in the NFL over the last few years. He has led the Seahawks to the playoffs in each of the last five seasons, and they are currently in first place in the NFC West. Wilson has also been named to the Pro Bowl in each of the last four seasons.
Why he could win
Wilson has been one of the most consistent quarterbacks in the NFL over the past few seasons, and he has shown no signs of slowing down. He’s coming off a year in which he threw for 4,212 yards and 36 touchdowns, and he also ran for 588 yards and three touchdowns. He’s a dual-threat quarterback who can beat you with his arm or his legs, and he’s a big reason why the Seahawks have been one of the most successful teams in the NFL over the past few years.
The Seahawks have a talented roster around Wilson, but they’re not without their flaws. Their offensive line is a bit of a concern, and their defense is not as dominant as it once was. However, Wilson is such a good quarterback that he has been able to overcome those weaknesses and keep the Seahawks competitive.
If Wilson can continue to play at a high level, there’s no reason why he can’t win the MVP award in 2021.
Why he might not win
Russell Wilson has been one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL over the past few seasons. He’s a five-time Pro Bowler and led the Seattle Seahawks to a Super Bowl win in 2014. However, there are a few reasons why he might not win the NFL MVP award in 2021.
First, Wilson is playing on a relatively mediocre Seahawks team. They’re currently 6-3 and in third place in the NFC West. If they don’t make the playoffs, it’s going to be hard for Wilson to win MVP.
Second, Wilson has been sharing the spotlight with running back Chris Carson this season. Carson has been one of the best running backs in the league and Wilson’s success has been somewhat overshadowed by him.
Finally, Wilson’s numbers aren’t quite as impressive as they were in previous seasons. He’s thrown for 2,737 yards and 25 touchdowns so far this season, which are both good numbers. However, he’s also thrown nine interceptions, which is tied for second-most in the NFL.
If Wilson can lead the Seahawks to a playoff berth and cut down on his turnovers, he’ll have a good shot at winning MVP. Otherwise, it might be time for someone else to take home the award.
Aaron Rodgers
The National Football League MVP is an award given by various media outlets to the most outstanding player in the National Football League (NFL). It is the highest individual honor that a player can receive in the NFL. The award was created in the 1961 season. The first recipient of the award was Green Bay Packers quarterback Bart Starr.
Why he could win
As the reigning NFL MVP, Rodgers has a strong case to repeat in 2021. He’s coming off another stellar season in 2020, throwing for 4,299 yards and 48 touchdowns with just five interceptions. He also led the Packers to a 13-3 record and another NFC North title.
Rodgers’ career has been defined by his ability to elevate the play of those around him, and that was on display again last season. Davante Adams had a monster year, catching 115 passes for 1,374 yards and 18 touchdowns. Rookie running back A.J. Dillon also showed promise late in the season, giving the Packers a strong rushing attack to complement Rodgers’ passing prowess.
With another year under head coach Matt LaFleur’s system and another season of development for young players like Dillon and Adams, Rodgers could be in line for another MVP award in 2021.
Why he might not win
While Rodgers is certainly a contender for the award, there are a few reasons why he might not win.
First, the Packers had a bit of a down year. They finished with a record of 13-3, which was good for first in the NFC North, but they were bounced out of the playoffs in the divisional round by the eventual NFC champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Secondly, Rodgers didn’t have quite as stellar of statistical season as he has had in years past. His 4,299 passing yards were his fewest since 2015, and his 48 touchdowns were his fewest since 2014.
And finally, Rodgers will be up against some stiff competition from reigning MVP Patrick Mahomes and Green Bay teammate Davante Adams. Both players had incredible seasons and could very well beat Rodgers out for the award.
Josh Allen
It’s no secret that Allen has been putting up some of the best numbers in the league this season. He’s currently leading the league in passing yards and touchdowns, and he’s done it all while helping to lead the Bills to one of the best records in the league. Allen is unquestionably the front-runner for the MVP award this season.
Why he could win
Josh Allen put up video game-like numbers this past season and will only be getting better. He threw for 4,544 yards and 37 touchdowns while also rushing for 421 yards and eight touchdowns. He did all of this while playing in every single game. He also led the Bills to their first AFC East title since 1995 and their first playoff berth since 1999.
The biggest thing that works in Josh Allen’s favor is that he doesn’t have any clear weaknesses. He’s an accurate passer, he has a strong arm, he’s mobile, he’s a good leader and he’s still young (24). He also has a great supporting cast around him, which will only get better next season. The only thing that could potentially hold him back is the fact that the Bills don’t have a true No. 1 receiver, but that didn’t seem to be a problem this past season.
Why he might not win
Josh Allen had a great 2020 season. He improved in a lot of areas and was a big reason why the Bills had such a successful season. However, there are a few reasons why he might not win the MVP award in 2021.
First, there are other quarterbacks who are more talented than him. Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes are both better than Allen and will most likely get more MVP votes because of it. Second, Allen doesn’t have the same supporting cast that he had last year. Stefon Diggs is gone and the Bills didn’t do much to replace him. This will make it harder for Allen to put up big numbers.
Lastly, the Bills are not expected to be as good as they were last year. They lost some key players in free agency and their schedule is much tougher this year. All of these factors make it unlikely that Josh Allen will win MVP in 2021.
