Who Will Win Rookie Of The Year Nfl?
Contents
The National Football League’s Rookie of the Year award is one of the most prestigious honors a young player can receive.
Every year, fans and experts alike try to predict who will take home the title.
This year, there are a number of talented rookies who could have a shot at the award.
So, who will win Rookie of the Year in the NFL?
Kyler Murray- Arizona Cardinals
Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray takes the cake for NFL Rookie of the Year. The 23-year-old athlete had a stellar first year in the league, leading the Cardinals to a divisional title. He also set a franchise record for most rushing yards by a quarterback in a single season.
Strengths
Despite being undersized for an NFL quarterback at 5-foot-10 and 207 pounds, Murray has shown the ability to make all the throws necessary to succeed at the highest level. He has a strong arm and can make every throw required in an NFL offense, from intermediate passes to deep balls. He also possesses good touch and accuracy on his passes, particularly on throws outside the pocket.
Murray is an agile quarterback who can extend plays with his feet and pick up yards when needed. He’s not a running back masquerading as a quarterback, but he can pick up key first downs with his legs when the pocket breaks down.
Murray also appears to have good instincts as a passer. He goes through his progressions quickly and doesn’t force passes into tight coverage. When protection breaks down, he has a good sense of when to bail out of the pocket and when to stay in and make a play.
Weaknesses
There are three big questions with Murray heading into his rookie season. The first is his size. At just 5-foot-10, Murray is shorter than most NFL quarterbacks, and that could be a problem when it comes to seeing over the line and making throws into tight windows.
The second question is whether he can transition from playing in a spread offense in college to a more traditional NFL offense. In college, Murray often operated out of the shotgun and spent much of his time throwing to wide open receivers. He’ll have to make quicker decisions and reads in the NFL, and it’s not clear if he’s up to the task.
The third concern is Murray’s durability. He’s built more like a running back than a quarterback, and it’s fair to wonder how long he’ll be able to hold up if he takes the kind of beating that most NFL quarterbacks do. If he can’t stay healthy, it won’t matter how talented he is.
Josh Jacobs- Oakland Raiders
Josh Jacobs, RB for the Oakland Raiders, is my pick for NFL Rookie of the Year. Jacobs was a standout at Alabama, running for over 1,000 yards in each of his final two seasons. He was a first-team All-SEC selection in 2018 and was a unanimous first-team All-American.
Strengths
Athleticism – With a 4.59 40 yard dash time, Jacobs proved that he has the necessary speed to be an every down back at the NFL level. He also offers good size at 5’10” and 220 pounds.
Vision – Probably Jacobs’ best attribute, his vision allows him to find holes that other backs wouldn’t even see. Once he hits a hole, he has the explosiveness to hit it hard and pick up extra yards.
Patience – In addition to having great vision, Jacobs also shows excellent patience behind his blockers, which is a trait that is not always easy to find in young running backs. He allows his blocks to develop before hitting the hole with full force.
Passing Game – Jacobs is also a threat in the passing game, as he showed good hands and an ability to create yards after the catch in college. He should be able to contribute right away as a receiver out of the backfield.
Weaknesses
Josh Jacobs was drafted by the Oakland Raiders with the 24th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. He is a running back out of Alabama.
Positional weaknesses:
-Although Jacobs is a very talented running back, he does have some weaknesses in his game. One of his biggest weaknesses is his pass catching ability. In his two years at Alabama, Jacobs only caught a total of 22 passes for 247 yards and one touchdown. This is something that he will need to improve on if he wants to be a three down back in the NFL.
-Another weakness of Jacobs is his durability. In his two years at Alabama, he only played in a total of 26 games due to injuries. This is something that the Raiders will need to keep an eye on as they don’t want their star running back to constantly be injured.
Devin Singletary- Buffalo Bills
Devin Singletary, also know as “Motor”, is a running back for the Buffalo Bills. He was drafted in the 3rd round of the 2019 NFL Draft. The Bills have high hopes for Singletary, as he is expected to be the primary ball carrier for the team. He has shown great promise in the preseason, and he is expected to have a great rookie year.
Strengths
Devin Singletary is a strong and elusive runner who can make defenders miss in the hole and in the open field. He also has good vision and patience, which allows him to find holes and make plays even when there isn’t much room to work with. He’s also a reliable receiver out of the backfield, which will make him a valuable asset in the passing game.
Weaknesses
Devin’s primary weakness is his tendency to dance too much behind the line of scrimmage. This costs him valuable yardage and time, and he will need to learn to trust his line more and pick up the yards that are there rather than trying to make something out of nothing. He also needs to work on his pass blocking, as he struggles to anchor himself against physical defenders.
David Montgomery- Chicago Bears
David Montgomery has had an impressive rookie season. He was drafted in the third round by the Chicago Bears and has quickly become one of their best players. Montgomery has rushed for over 800 yards and has eight touchdowns. He has also shown the ability to catch the ball out of the backfield, something that the Bears have lacked in recent years. Montgomery has been a big part of the Bears’ success this season and is a leading candidate for Rookie of the Year.
Strengths
David Montgomery’s strengths are in his ability to make people miss and break tackles. In his three years at Iowa State, he forced 109 missed tackles and averaged 5.3 yards per carry after contact, according to Pro Football Focus. He also has good vision and is a patient runner, which should serve him well behind a Bears offensive line that isn’t expected to be very good in 2019.
Weaknesses
David Montgomery has good vision and can make sharp cuts, but he lacks top-end speed to breakaway from NFL defenders. While he’s shifty and can make defenders miss in the open field, he doesn’t have the long speed to take it the distance if he gets into the open field.
Gardner Minshew- Jacksonville Jaguars
Quarterback Gardner Minshew has had an eventful NFL career thus far. After being drafted in the sixth round by the Jacksonville Jaguars, Minshew was thrust into the starting role after an injury to Nick Foles. He proceeded to have an impressive rookie season, completing over 60 percent of his passes for 3,271 yards, 21 touchdowns, and six interceptions. He also rushed for 344 yards and three touchdowns.
Strengths
A 6th-round pick out of Washington State, Minshew was thrust into the starting role after Nick Foles suffered a broken collarbone in Week 1. All he did was lead the Jaguars to a 6-6 record as a starter, passing for over 3,000 yards and 21 touchdowns while completing nearly 64 percent of his passes. He also showed an uncanny ability to extend plays and make big throws down the field, averaging 7.8 yards per attempt.
Weaknesses
Minshew will have to improve his accuracy and ball placement if he wants to be a long-term starting quarterback in the NFL. He was too often off-target with his passes last season, whether it was due to poor footwork or decision-making.
