Initially a member of the NBL, the Lakers won the 1948 NBL championship before joining the rival Basketball Association of America (BAA), where they would win five of their next six championships, led by star George Mikan. After struggling financially in the late 1950s following Mikan’s retirement, they relocated to Los Angeles before the 1960–61 season.
Led by Hall of Famers Elgin Baylor and Jerry West, Los Angeles made some playoff runs before losing out to teams like Celtics and Knicks in Eastern Conference Finals or to eventual champion Warriors in Western Conference Finals during much of 1960s and 1970s. These failures prompted a period of rebuilding that featured trades for players like James Worthy and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar that set up one of greatest dynasties in NBA history during 1980s which featured another Hall-of-Famer Magic Johnson as its centerpiece along with head coach Pat Riley. The team won five more championships between 1980 and 1988 helping to cement themselves as one if not greatest team in NBA history. Although they failed make playoffs for next few years following retirement of Johnson due to HIV infection, they reemerged under new head coach Phil Jackson winning three more titles between 2000 and 2002 with Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant as its cornerstones. With Bryant carrying much load for almost two decades, they won two more titles back-to-back in 2009–10 and 2010–11 under Jackson becoming first team since Celtics dynasty of 1960s to win threepeat twice. Currently led by All-Star duo Anthony Davis and LeBron James, they are considered strong favorites to win title this year which if they do will give them record tying 17th title tying Celtics for most titles won by a single franchise in NBA history.
