Initially a member of the NBL, the Lakers won the 1948 NBL championship before joining the rival Basketball Association of America, where they would win five of their next six championships. After struggling financially in the late 1950s following Mikan’s retirement and because they could not agree to share television revenues equally with other NBA teams after Gail Goodrich and Jerry West joined him in 1970–71. They later rebounded under new head coach Bill Sharman while taking advantage of free agency to add other stars such as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and James Worthy; Abdul-Jabbar and West would lead them to eight straight Finals appearances from 1980 through 1987. In 2000 Shaq was traded to LA where he teamed up with Kobe Bryant to win 3 more championships.
