It is sometimes called the Junior Circuit because it claimed Major League status for the 1901 season, 25 years after the formation of the National League.
The American League has 15 teams, three in Canada and 12 in the United States. The divisional and league champions of the American League play each other in the best-of-seven AL Championship Series to determine who advances to Major League Baseball’s ultimate showdown, the World Series.

Both leagues currently have 15 teams. After two years of conflict in a “war” of attrition with thge American Association (AA), peace was made at a meeting on December 7, 1892. Professionalism was declared St. Louis Browns owner Chris Von Der Ahe’s property rights to his team were also recognized by both leagues and he became baseball’s first team owner who was not also a player. The AA had teams in twelve cities while the NL had only eight. Intra-league games were scheduled for the first time that year.
