His career highlights
Andy Murray OBE is a British professional tennis player from Scotland, ranked No.1 in men’s singles. He is a three-time Grand Slam tournament winner, two-time Olympic champion, Davis Cup champion, winner of the 2016 ATP World Tour Finals, and former world No.1.
Murray represents Great Britain in his sporting activities and is a member of the Lawn Tennis Association. He has won 18 ATP singles titles and three doubles titles, including two Wimbledon mixed doubles crowns with Laura Robson and Heather Watson.
Born in Glasgow, Murray played tennis from an early age and competed on the junior circuit until he was 18 years old. In 2004, he turned professional and won his first ATP singles title that year at the SAP Open. The following year he debuted at Wimbledon and reached the second round. He climbed up the rankings steadily over the next few years until he broke into the top 10 for the first time after winning at Queen’s Club in 2009.
Murray’s breakthrough came at the 2012 US Open when he defeated Novak Djokovic in five sets to win his first Grand Slam singles title and become only the fifth British man to win a major since 1937. The following year he retained his Olympic gold medal by defeating Roger Federer in straight sets in the final of the London Olympics. In 2013, Murray won his second Wimbledon title by defeating Djokovic in straight sets in that year’s final; this made him only the eighth British man to win multiple Wimbledon singles titles since 1900
Juan Martin del Potro
Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina won the gold medal in tennis at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Del Potro defeated defending champion Andy Murray of Great Britain in the final, 6–4, 7–6(7–2). This was del Potro’s first Olympic medal, and he became the first Argentine tennis player to win an Olympic singles gold medal.
His performance in the 2016 Olympics
Juan Martin del Potro entered the 2016 Summer Olympics as the sixth seed. He had a first-round bye before facing Portugal’s João Sousa in the second round, whom he beat in straight sets. In the third round, he played Kazakhstan’s Mikhail Kukushkin, also winning in straight sets. This set up a meeting with defending Olympic champion Andy Murray in the quarterfinals. Del Potro then upset Murray in straight sets to advance to the semifinals, where he faced Rafael Nadal.
In a repeat of their 2009 Wimbledon semifinal matchup, del Potro again prevailed in five sets, coming back from a two-set deficit to win 3–6, 6–7^(5–7), 6–3, 6–2, 6–3 and become the first Argentine tennis player to medal in singles since Guillermo Vilas won bronze in 1980. This victory also avenged his losses to Nadal at both Wimbledon and the French Open earlier that year. With this victory, he became only the second man ever to defeat both Murray and Nadal at an Olympic Games, after fellow Argentine Olympian Guillermo Coria did so at Athens 2004. In the final, del Potro defeated Japan’s Kei Nishikori to win the gold medal 6–4, 7–6^(7–4), becoming an Olympic champion for the first time and denying Nishikori a second consecutive silver medal. This was also Argentina’s first gold medal in men’s tennis singles since 1948.

In 2019, del Potro was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
