Who won the WWE United States Championship?

The WWE United States Championship is a professional wrestling championship promoted by the American professional wrestling promotion WWE on the SmackDown brand. It is one of two secondary titles in WWE, alongside the Intercontinental Championship on the Raw brand. The current champion is AJ Styles, who is in his second reign.

The United States Championship was initially established as the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) United States Heavyweight Championship on January 1, 1975, with Harley Race becoming the inaugural champion. When Jim Crockett Promotions (JCP) seceded from the NWA in 1988, the title was renamed the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship and became exclusive to World Championship Wrestling (WCW). In 2001, after a unification tournament held by WCW and its competitor Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW), then-ECW representative Rhyno defeated WCW’s Mike Awesome for the unified championship and it became exclusive to ECW’s successor promotion, Extreme Rules Wrestling (ERW). The title remained exclusive to ERW until it closed in early 2002.

When ERW ceased operations in early 2002, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) purchased select assets from ERW and as a result resumed promoting a United States Championship. A tournament was held later that month which saw Eddie Guerrero defeat Chris Benoit in the finals to win the title; Guerrero would hold it for almost one year until he defeated Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania XIX to unify it with the WWE Championship. The title remained unified until June 2006 when RAW General Manager Eric Bischoff awarded Booker T with sole ownership of the title as recognition of his past contributions to WCW; Booker T subsequently lost ownership of it when he failed to beat John Cena at The Great American Bash later that month. Like its predecessor promotions NWA and WCW before it, WWE has promoted a number of different variants of this championship: a secondary version for its Cruiserweight division wrestlers from 2008 until 2016; a separate women’s version from 2009 until 2010; and an interpromotional version for SmackDown Live wrestlers from 2017 onwards following WWE’s brand extension.

The championship has been contested in all three major annually held WWE pay-per-view events: WrestleMania, SummerSlam, and Survivor Series. Due to its original long validity duration – which remains at ten years – none of its holders have been forced by WWE to vacate as inactive or retired champions such as other titles do; as such, Edge currently holds all three records for longest combined individual reigns at 1,467 days while Ric Flair holds all three records for most reigns with six each.
