Nadal entered the tournament as the third seed, but he was quickly thrust into the spotlight after top seed Djokovic was stunned in the Round of 64 by unseeded Marco Cecchinato. Nadal then cruised to the final without losing a set, dispatching of Cecchinato in the semifinals in straight sets.
In the final, Nadal once again had little trouble with Djokovic, who was visibly fatigued after his marathon semifinal win over Dominic Thiem that lasted nearly five hours. Nadal won the first two sets easily before Djokovic mounted a small comeback in the third, but it wasn’t enough as Nadal won the match and claimed his record-extending 13th French Open title.

Federer Wins Australian Open
Roger Federer has won the 2017 Australian Open, defeating Rafael Nadal in an epic five-set match that lasted over five hours. It was a record-breaking win for Federer, who is now the oldest man to win a Grand Slam singles title. It was also the first time he had beaten Nadal in a five-set match.
Federer’s Road to the Finals
In the early rounds of the tournament, Federer faced some tough opponents, but he battled through to the quarterfinals. There, he met unseeded American player Tennys Sandgren, who he defeated in straight sets. This win brought Federer into his 41st Grand Slam semifinal, where he would face another American player, Kyle Edmund. Edmund had already caused an upset in the tournament by defeating fourth seed Alexander Zverev in the second round. However, Federer was too strong for him and won in straight sets again, setting up a final against Marin Cilic.
This was Federer’s sixth Australian Open final, and he was aiming to win the title for the seventh time, which would have been a record. Cilic had reached the final after defeating unseeded Briton Kyle Edmund in the semifinals. In a closely-fought match, Federer eventually prevailed 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 to win his 20th Grand Slam singles title. With this win, Federer overtook Pete Sampras in second place on the all-time list for most Grand Slam singles titles won by a man. He is now behind only Novak Djokovic who has won 16 Grand Slam titles.
The Match
In a thrilling five-set match, Roger Federer defeated Marin Cilic in the final of the 2018 Australian Open to claim his sixth title at the tournament and 20th Grand Slam singles crown overall. It was a rematch of sorts for the two players, as Cilic had beaten Federer in straight sets in last year’s Wimbledon final.
This time around, Federer prevailed in a battle that lasted just over four hours. He won the first set 6-3 before Cilic evened things up by winning the second 6-7(5). Federer then took control of the match by winning the next two sets 6-4, 6-3, but Cilic would not go down without a fight. The Croatian battled back to win the fifth set 6-7(8), forcing a deciding tiebreaker.
In the end, it was Federer who came out on top, winning the tiebreaker 10-8 to claim victory. With the win, he became the first man in tennis history to win 20 Grand Slam singles titles.
