We take a look at the top contenders for the 2019 NHL MVP award and make our predictions for who will take home the hardware.

Who Won the 2019 NHL MVP?

The 2019 NHL MVP was announced on June 19, 2019, with Tampa Bay Lightning forward Nikita Kucherov taking home the honors. Kucherov becomes the first Russian-born player to ever win the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy as the NHL’s leading goal scorer, and is also a finalist for the Hart Memorial Trophy as league MVP.

Nikita Kucherov

Nikita Kucherov is a Russian professional ice hockey right winger who serves as captain for the Tampa Bay Lightning of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was selected in the second round, 58th overall, by the Lightning in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. Kucherov helped lead the Lightning to the Stanley Cup championship in 2020, scoring the series-clinching goal in Game 6. He is a two-time Hart Memorial Trophy winner as league MVP and a three-time member of the NHL First All-Star Team.

Connor McDavid

On June 19, 2019, Connor McDavid was awarded the 2018–19 Hart Memorial Trophy at the NHL Awards ceremony. This marked the second time that he won the Hart Trophy, making him the 14th player in NHL history to win it multiple times and the third-youngest player to do so. The other 13 players are Wayne Gretzky (9), Hart’s namesake Gordie Howe (6), Eddie Shore (4), Ted Lindsay (4), Mario Lemieux (3), Bobby Orr (3), Howie Morenz (3), Bobby Hull (2), Stan Mikita (2), Guy Lafleur (2), Joe Sakic (2), Peter Forsberg (2) and Alexander Ovechkin.

Sidney Crosby

Sidney Crosby, a center on the Pittsburgh Penguins, won the Conn Smythe Trophy as Most Valuable Player of the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs. It’s Crosby’s third Conn Smythe, tying him with Bobby Orr and Mario Lemieux for the most by a player in NHL history.

Crosby scored 31 points (10 goals, 21 assists) in 24 playoff games to help the Penguins win a Stanley Cup for the fourth time in his career. He had at least one point in 19 of Pittsburgh’s 24 games and scored a goal in each of its final five games, including the winning goal in overtime of Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Nashville Predators.

The National Hockey League MVP is awarded to the player who is considered the most valuable to his team during the regular season. The winner is selected by a vote of NHL players. This year, the winner of the Hart Trophy is Florida Panthers defenseman Sergei Bobrovsky.

Alex Ovechkin

As the season comes to an end, the question on everyone’s mind is who will win the NHL’s most prestigious individual award, the Hart Memorial Trophy? This award is given to “the player judged to be the most valuable to his team.” There are many candidates this year, but we believe that Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin deserves this award.

Ovechkin has had an incredible season. He leads the league in goals with 51, and is second in points with 87. He has been a key factor in the Capitals’ success this season, as they are currently first in their division. Ovechkin is also a great leader, both on and off the ice. He has been a role model for young players and has always been very accommodating to fans and the media.

There are other candidates who have had great seasons as well, but we believe that Ovechkin is most deserving of the Hart Memorial Trophy. He has been a dominating force on offense and has helped lead his team to success. He is also a great leader and role model for young players.

Patrick Kane

Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks has won the MVP award for the 2019 NHL season. This is his third MVP award, making him just the ninth player in NHL history to win the award three times. Kane had a stellar season, scoring 110 points in 82 games. He also had 21 points in 25 playoff games, helping the Blackhawks reach the Conference Finals.

Nathan MacKinnon

Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche has been named the winner of the 2019 Hart Trophy, given to the player who is considered most valuable to his team.

MacKinnon, who finished second in Hart voting last year, tallied 99 points (41 goals, 58 assists) in 70 games during the 2018-19 regular season. He’s just the fifth player in Avalanche history to reach the 90-point mark in consecutive seasons and is one of two active NHL players (Leon Draisaitl) to accomplish that feat.

NHL MVP for 2019 goes to Tampa Bay Lightning’s Nikita Kucherov!

Andrei Vasilevskiy

Andrei Vasilevskiy of the Tampa Bay Lightning has been named the 2019 National Hockey League Most Valuable Player, as voted by members of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association.

Vasilevskiy led all goaltenders in wins (39), shutouts (eight), and save percentage (.925), and was second in goals-against average (2.40) among netminders who appeared in at least 40 games this season. The 24-year-old from Tyumen, Russia also finished third in Vezina Trophy voting as the NHL’s best goaltender.

This is the first time Vasilevskiy has been named MVP, and he is just the second goaltender in NHL history to win the Hart Trophy, joining Jose Theodore of the Montreal Canadiens, who did so in 2002.

Tuukka Rask

Tuukka Rask of the Boston Bruins has been selected as the winner of the 2019 Ted Lindsay Award, which is given annually to the “most outstanding player” in the NHL as voted on by fellow members of the NHL Players’ Association.

Sergei Bobrovsky

Sergei Bobrovsky of the Florida Panthers has been named the 2019 National Hockey League’s Most Valuable Player and recipient of the Hart Memorial Trophy.

Bobrovsky, who was acquired by the Panthers from Columbus on July 1, received 84 first-place votes and garnered 1,384 total points in voting by members of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association. Carolina captain Aleksander Barkov finished second with eight first-place votes and 1,206 total points, while Dallas Stars center Tyler Seguin was third with one first-place vote and 869 total points.
