The Cleveland Cavaliers, also known as the Cavs, are an American professional basketball team based in Cleveland, Ohio. The Cavs compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Eastern Conference Central Division. The team began play as an expansion team in 1970, along with the Portland Trail Blazers and Buffalo Braves. Home games were first held at Cleveland Arena from 1970 to 1974, followed by the Richfield Coliseum from 1974 to 1994. Since 1994, the Cavs have played their home games at Quicken Loans Arena in downtown Cleveland, which they shared with the arena’s former tenant, the Cleveland Barons, of the National Hockey League (NHL) from 2001 to 2006. The Cavaliers opened their inaugural season losing their first 15 games and struggled in their early years, placing no better than sixth place in the Eastern Conference during their first five seasons. The team won their first Central Division title in 1976, which also marked their first playoff appearance in franchise history, where they advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals. The Cavaliers have made 22 playoff appearances since then: 16 times winning at least one series and six other times playing in conference semifinals without moving on; this makes them one of only four current NBA teams that have made it to 20 straight postseasons (the San Antonio Spurs and Boston Celtics being two teams that are currently on longer streaks).

Afterwards reaching back-to-back NBA Finals for 2017 & 2018 which resulted in losses both times against Kevin Durant -led Golden State Warriors . Offseason trades for All-Star forward Kawhi Leonard & veteran guard Danny Green for guard George Hill , forward Kyle Korver & draft picks helped lead Toronto Raptors to best regular season record 63-19 for 2019 before beating Milwaukee Bucks 4-2 en route to 1st ever NBA Championship & Leonard’s 2nd Finals MVP trophy .
