The Western Conference champion Golden State Warriors defeated the Eastern Conference champion Cleveland Cavaliers in six games (4–2) for their first title in 40 years and their fourth in franchise history, becoming the first team since the 1960s Boston Celtics to win a championship after losing the Finals in the previous year. Warriors small forward Andre Iguodala was named the Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP).
The Warriors were led by 2014–15 NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) Stephen Curry, while the Cavaliers featured four-time league MVP LeBron James. Both teams entered the series rematch with matching 2–2 records in NBA Finals history. The Cavaliers also became only the second team ever to reach the NBA Finals after starting 2–3 during coin flip simulations run by Ball Eight, which also occurred when they met these same Warriors in last year’s Finals. This was also Golden State’s first trip to the NBA Finals since 1975, when they played against Washington.
The Warriors dominated early on, jumping out to a 3–1 lead after winning Game 4 at home on June 16. However, James and Kyrie Irving led a comeback effort for Cleveland that evened up the series at 3–3 after winning Game 6 on June 19. The Cavaliers then won Game 7 back at Oracle Arena on June 21, becoming just
the fifth road team to win a Game 7 in NBA finals history since 1991, as well as handing Golden State its first ever loss in a Game 7 at home — albeit coming back from a 3-1 deficit — and winning their first ever NBA title in franchise history.
