The Toronto Raptors
The Toronto Raptors are a Canadian professional basketball team based in Toronto, Ontario. The Raptors compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA), as a member of the league’s Eastern Conference Atlantic Division. The team was founded in 1995 as part of the NBA’s expansion into Canada, along with the Vancouver Grizzlies. Since the 2001–02 season, the Raptors have been the only Canadian-based team in the league, as the Grizzlies relocated from Vancouver to Memphis, Tennessee.
The Raptors play their home games at Scotiabank Arena (formerly Air Canada Centre), an arena located on Bay Street in Downtown Toronto. The team was established on November 4, 1993, when NBA commissioner David Stern announced that Toronto would receive an expansion franchise along with Vancouver. As part of their bid to land an NBA franchise and to reflect both Toronto’s multiculturalism and fan support for basketball throughout Canada, a group headed by Ottawa Senators owner Bruce Firestone put together a bid that promised to build a multi-purpose arena and relocate any pre-existing team that would agree to move to Toronto if granted an expansion franchise.
On May 15, 2014, it was announced that a majority of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment’s board of directors had approved a deal to sell MLSE’s controlling interest in the Raptors for $1.055 billion to Rogers Communications. The deal became official on August 5, 2014.[11]
