Dwyane Wade of Miami was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) for both the All-Star Game and the finals. Gate receipts were nearly $140 million for these finals, a record low since games were first televised in 1947.
This was Dallas’ second trip back to back to the NBA Finals since 1988–89 but their first win. The Mavericks lost in 1988 to the Los Angeles Lakers and lost in 1989 to their then-division rival, Portland Trail Blazers both times in seven games but were successful this time against Miami winning their first ever championship in franchise history after continual disappointment throughout its history.

The 2006 NBA Draft
The 2006 NBA Draft was held on June 28, 2006 at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City, and was broadcast live on ESPN. In this draft, National Basketball Association (NBA) teams took turns selecting amateur collegiate basketball players and other first-time eligible players. From a total of 60 prospects, Greg Oden, Andrea Bargnani, LaMarcus Aldridge and Tyrus Thomas were selected as the top four picks respectively. A total of 14 collegians and 13 international players were selected in the first round by NBA teams. This draft was notable for a superior number of collegiate freshman getting drafted within an unusually high amount of picks. Of the 29 NBA teams in 2006–07 season, 16 ended up having a freshman starting at least one game; that would not happen again until 2017’s draft occurred. Brandon Roy from University of Washington was selected sixth overall by Portland Trail Blazers, making him the highest-selected player out of the Pacific-10 Conference since Gary Payton (second overall selection in 1990). Roy also became only the third player to get drafted out of Washington in the first round since 1978’s draft (Detlef Schrempf and Chris Welp were both picked that year).

The series was played under a best-of-seven format, with each team hosting Games 1, 2, and 5 (if necessary); it also used an altered 2-3-2 home-court advantage system for Games 3 and 4, in which the team with home-court advantage for the first two games played host to Games 3 and 4 instead of Games 1 and 2. Despite never leading in any game during their playoff run prior to entering The Finals, neither Miami nor Dallas held home court advantage in this series; as both teams finished with identical regular season records of 60 wins and 22 losses (a then league best), they were only assured of having home court advantage in any potential Game 7 by virtue of having won their respective conference championships.
This was the first NBA Finals since 1999 not to feature Shaquille O’Neal or Tim Duncan. This was also only Miami’s second trip to The Finals in their entire history until they made it three years later when they won again in 2012. The Mavericks made their first trip to The Finals in franchise history after having gone 13 years without winning a playoff series prior to 2006; they would return again four years later when they won their first ever championship in 2010–11 against none other than Wade and Miami. 2006 also marked a rematch between Pat Riley and Don Nelson twenty years after their showdown in 1986: Nelson had coached Riley’s Lakers for part of that season before resigning amid several disagreements with management, while Riley went on to win his second title as head coach that year.
