Who Won The 2007 Nba Championship?
We take a look back at the 2007 NBA Finals and discuss who came out on top.
Introduction
The National Basketball Association (NBA) championship is an annual professional basketball tournament contested between the Eastern and Western conference champions. The winning team receives the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy, which was named after former NBA commissioner Larry O’Brien. The conference champions are determined by a playoff, which is a best-of-seven series.
The 2007 NBA Finals
The 2007 NBA Finals was the championship series of the National Basketball Association (NBA)’s 2006–07 season, and the conclusion of the season’s playoffs. The best-of-seven playoff was contested between the Western Conference champion San Antonio Spurs and the Eastern Conference champion Cleveland Cavaliers. The Spurs swept the Cavaliers 4 games to 0. This was the fourth consecutive year that a team from the Eastern Conference had reached the NBA Finals, but only their second appearance since 1999 (joining only Detroit, who made it three straight times). Additionally, this was also Cleveland’s first Finals appearance since 1995. San Antonio’s Tony Parker was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the series. The series was televised on ABC under contract to show NBA games through 2013.
The San Antonio Spurs
The San Antonio Spurs are an American professional basketball team based in San Antonio, Texas. The Spurs compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Western Conference Southwest Division. The team plays its home games at the AT&T Center in San Antonio.
The Spurs are one of four former American Basketball Association teams to join the NBA at the 1976 ABA–NBA merger and are one of only two former ABA teams to have won an NBA championship, the other being the Portland Trail Blazers. As of 2019, the Spurs have won 22 division titles since joining the NBA and have made 34 playoff appearances, 23 times in consecutive seasons since 1987–88. In their 43 NBA seasons since 1976–77, the Spurs have compiled a winning percentage of .610 (second highest all-time), made nine trips to the Conference Finals (tied for ninth all-time), and advanced to five NBA Finals, winning four championships (fifth all-time). From 1999–2000 to 2016–17, the Spurs won 50 games each season setting a record of 18 consecutive seasons with 50 or more wins. In their 22 NBA seasons since Tim Duncan was drafted by them in 1997, they have missed the playoffs only four times – 1998–99 because of a lockout-shortened 50-game season, where they finished 6th in a 7 team conference – and three times in a row from 2017 to 2019. They currently hold the longest active playoff streak amongst active NBA teams with 22 appearances.
The Cleveland Cavaliers
The Cleveland Cavaliers won the 2007 NBA Championship after defeating the San Antonio Spurs in a thrilling seven-game series. It was the Cavaliers’ first ever NBA title, and LeBron James was named Finals MVP.
