Closer Aroldis Chapman was virtually untouchable for the Cuban team, posting a 0.00 ERA and converting all 5 save opportunities. However, the most dominant pitcher of the tournament was Japan’s Daisuke Matsuzaka, who went 2-0 with a 0.51 ERA in 17 1/3 innings pitched.

The United States faced off against Puerto Rico in a rematch of the 2013 final. Puerto Rico won that game 3–0, but the United States was determined to come out on top this time around.
The United States started the game strong, scoring two runs in the first inning. But Puerto Rico quickly answered back, tying the game in the bottom of the second inning. The game remained tied until the seventh inning, when the United States scored two more runs to take a 4–2 lead. Puerto Rico made a furious comeback in the ninth inning, scoring three runs to take a 5–4 lead. But in the bottom of the ninth inning, with two outs and two strikes, American player Christian Yelich hit a walk-off home run to give his team a 6–5 victory and their first ever World Baseball Classic title.
