The Teams
The Golden State Warriors won the 2018 NBA Finals, beating the Cleveland Cavaliers in four games to two. It was the fourth consecutive Finals appearance for the Warriors, and the third consecutive Finals loss for the Cavaliers.
The Golden State Warriors
The Golden State Warriors are an American professional basketball team based in Oakland, California. The Warriors compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Western Conference Pacific Division. The Warriors were established in 1946 as the Philadelphia Warriors based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a founding member of the Basketball Association of America (BAA). In 1962, the franchise relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area and was renamed the San Francisco Warriors. In 1971, the team was renamed the Golden State Warriors, and moved to its current location in Oakland.
The Cleveland Cavaliers
The Cleveland Cavaliers are an American professional basketball team based in Cleveland, Ohio. The Cavaliers compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Eastern Conference Central Division. The team began play as an expansion team in 1970, along with the Portland Trail Blazers and Buffalo Braves. Home games were first held at Cleveland Arena from 1970 to 1974, followed by the Richfield Coliseum from 1974 to 1994. Since 1994, the Cavs have played their home games at Quicken Loans Arena in downtown Cleveland, which is shared with the arena football team Cleveland Gladiators and the American Hockey League’s Cleveland Monsters. Dan Gilbert has owned the team since March 2005.
The Cavaliers opened their inaugural season losing their first 15 games and struggled in their early years, placing no better than sixth in the Eastern Conference during their first five seasons. The team won their first Central Division title in 1976, which also marked their first playoff appearance since joining the NBA. As former Cavaliers general manager Harry Weltman once said of that initial winning squad, “They defy explanation.”
In 1982, under new head coach Chuck Daly, the Cavaliers began a franchise-turnaround. They qualified for three straight playoffs and had two 50-win seasons (1982–83 and 1983–84), which marked the first time since 1966–67 that a Cavs squad achieved this feat. Led by Mark Price’s accuracy from long range, guard Ron Harper and forwards Larry Nance and Brad Daugherty, they advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals in 1988; however they were swept by Michael Jordan’s eventual champion Chicago Bulls squad four games to none..

The Game
The Golden State Warriors defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2018 NBA Finals. The Warriors won the series in four games. This was the fourth consecutive year that the two teams had met in the Finals.
Game 1
The 2018 NBA Finals was the championship series of the National Basketball Association (NBA)’s 2017–18 season and conclusion of the season’s playoffs. In this best-of-seven playoff, the defending NBA champions and Western Conference champions Golden State Warriors swept the Eastern Conference champions Cleveland Cavaliers 4 games to 0. This was the fourth consecutive meeting between the two teams in the NBA Finals, with the Warriors winning in 2015, 2017, and 2018. For the first time in NBA history, a team has won three championships in four years.
This was Golden State’s eighth appearance in the Finals in their last nine seasons dating back to 2010–11, becoming one of only two teams to achieve this feat (the other being the Boston Celtics who made ten Finals appearances in thirteen seasons from 1957 to 1969). It was also Cleveland’s fourth straight trip to the NBA Finals, which tied them with the San Antonio Spurs for second most consecutive trips behind only three-time champion Golden State (who were making their fourth trip in four years at the time).
On June 9, one day before Game 3 of the Finals, it was reported that through extensive testing over several months by a host of doctors, it had been determined that Cavaliers’ All-Star forward Kevin Love had indeed suffered a concussion during Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals against Boston which caused him to miss Game 7; an independent neurologist later confirmed this diagnosis. Despite Love’s concussion, he played 48 minutes in Game 1 as he finished with 17 points.
Game 2
The Cleveland Cavaliers take on the Golden State Warriors in Game 2 of the NBA Finals. After a tough loss in Game 1, the Cavaliers will look to even the series before it shifts to Oakland.
Game 3
The 2018 NBA Finals was the championship series of the National Basketball Association (NBA)’s 2017–18 season and conclusion of the season’s playoffs. In this best-of-seven playoff, the defending NBA champions and Western Conference champions Golden State Warriors swept the Eastern Conference champions Cleveland Cavaliers 4–0. This marked the fourth consecutive year in which both teams met in the NBA Finals, and the third straight matchup between them in a best-of-seven series. Each team had won once in a best-of-seven series by June 16, 2017, when the Cavaliers defeated the Warriors 129–120 in overtime in Game 5 of their 2017 NBA Finals matchup, becoming the first team to win an NBA Finals series after trailing 3–0.
The Warriors entered these Finals having won two consecutive championships, while also having appeared in three straight finals series, winning one and losing two. They defeated both San Antonio Spurs (Western Conference) and Houston Rockets (Western Conference) en route to their fourth consecutive finals appearance. Meanwhile, this was Cleveland’s seventh consecutive trip to The Finals dating back to 2015; they had previously lost in 2015, 2016, and 2017 to Golden State.
This is also notable for being only the second time that two teams have met in The Finals for four consecutive seasons (joining 1950–1953), after Boston and Minneapolis accomplished it from 1959 to1966 (not including a rematch between those specific teams during that time period).
Game 4
The Warriors took Game 4 of The Finals, 108-85, to even the series at two games apiece. Stephen Curry poured in a game-high 37 points and added six three-pointers as the Warriors withstood a furious rally by the Cavaliers in the fourth quarter to stave off elimination. Kevin Durant added 20 points for the Warriors, who improved to 9-0 at home in The Finals when facing elimination.
The Aftermath
The Warriors won the 2018 NBA Finals after a tough series against the Cavaliers. This was the fourth consecutive year that these two teams had met in the Finals, and the Warriors were victorious in three of those meetings. The Warriors are now the NBA’s most successful team of the modern era, winning three championships in the last four years.
The Warriors’ Celebration
The Warriors’ celebration after winning the 2018 NBA Finals was a joyous occasion for the team, their fans, and the city of Oakland. The players and coaches gathered on the court to receive their championship rings and trophies, and then took turns hoisting the Larry O’Brien Trophy overhead. The crowd roared with applause, cheering and chanting “Warriors!” throughout.
It was a moment of pure elation for everyone involved, as the Warriors had finally secured their third NBA title in four years. The journey had been a long one, full of ups and downs, but in the end, they had triumphed. And now, they could enjoy the fruits of their labor.
The celebration continued long into the night, with players and coaches partying together at various locations around Oakland. They were joined by friends and family members, as well as celebrities like rapper Lil B and actor/director Spike Lee. It was clear that everyone was having a great time and basking in the glory of victory.
The next day, the team held a victory parade through downtown Oakland, giving fans one last chance to show their support. Thousands lined the streets, waving flags and cheering as the Warriors’ float made its way through town. It was a fitting end to an incredible season – one that will be remembered for years to come.
The Cavaliers’ Reaction
The Cavaliers’ season came to an end on Friday night, as they were defeated by the Warriors in Game 4 of the NBA Finals.
Following the loss, the Cavaliers met with the media to discuss the season and their future.
LeBron James said that he is not sure if he will be back with the Cavaliers next season, as he is set to become a free agent.
“I have no idea at this point,” James said when asked about his future. “The one thing that I’ve always done is handled everything with class and grace and just tried to be as professional as possible. I’ve given this city everything that I have, and they welcomed me with open arms when I came back in 2014. So, it’s just a lot of emotions going through right now.”
Kevin Love also spoke to the media, saying that he plans on staying with the Cavaliers next season.
“This has been an unbelievable ride,” Love said. “It’s been an honor to be a part of this team.”
