Initially a member of the NBL, the Lakers won the 1948 NBL championship before fully joining the NBA as it absorbed teams from rival leagues during that time such as the NBL, Basketball Association of America and Western Hockey League. Jimmy Butler was named as the Finals MVP, becoming just the third player in NBA history to win both an NCAA championship and an NBA championship, joining Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Clyde Drexler.
