On September 19, 2012, Wilkin Ramirez hit a grand slam for the Rays against their AL East rivals, the Baltimore Orioles; this was notable because it was not only Tampa Bay’s first grand slam in franchise history but also because it came on Ramirez’s very first swing as a Ray (having been acquired by Tampa Bay just two days earlier). The Rays won 90 games for just the second time everin 2013and made their second postseason appearance that year; they defeated boththe Texas Rangers andthe Boston Red Sox before losing tothe eventual World Series championRed Sox againin the ALCS. Following another unsuccessful season in 2014, however, ownership decided to “blow up” much ofthe team’s core personnel via trades; these deals sentseveral star players(suchas David PriceandBen Zobrist) packing while bringing back a large numberof young prospects and/or “reclamation projects” intoreturn. As aresultofthese trades (along with some strong seasons from several holdover players), Tampa Bay put together athree-year stretchof playoff berths(2016–2018) for justthe second time everin franchise history.
