The 114th edition of the World Series, it was a best-of-seven playoff played between the American League (AL) champion Boston Red Sox and the National League (NL) champion Los Angeles Dodgers. The Red Sox beat the Dodgers in five games to win their fourth World Series title in 15 years dating back to 2004, and their ninth overall. This was also the first meeting of these two teams since 1916. These two teams met for the first time in the playoffs in104 years.
In Game 1, starting pitcher Chris Sale helped the Red Sox overcome a deficit as he got a no-decision after pitching six innings and giving up one run on five hits with seven strikeouts. Steve Pearce hit a go-ahead two-run home run off Clayton Kershaw in the seventh inning to give Boston a 3–1 lead they would not relinquish; Craig Kimbrel closed out the game for his fifth save as Boston won 3–2. Jackie Bradley Jr.’s solo home run off Kenley Jansen in the eighth inning of Game 2 gave Boston a 4–3 lead they would not relinquish as they went on to win 4–3 and take a 2–0 series lead.
Kershaw saved Game 3 for Los Angeles with 6⅔ innings of work while allowing one run on three hits and striking out nine batters; whereas, Sale got his first postseason win after pitching seven innings while only giving up one run on four hits with eight strikeouts as Boston won 8–4 to take a commanding 3–0 series lead. Eduardo Núñez’s pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom of seventh inning broke open Game 4 as Boston won 9–6 to sweep Los Angeles and win their fourth World Series title in 15 years. Steve Pearce was named World Series Most Valuable Player (MVP) after hitting three home runs and driving in eight RBIs while only playing in four out of five games due to injury.
