In 1903, the upstart American League challenged the established National League to a playoff for the first modern baseball championship. The two winners of each league met in a best-of-nine series, with the AL’s Boston Americans (now the Red Sox) facing off against the NL’s Pittsburgh Pirates. After Boston won the first game, Pittsburgh took three straight to take a 3–1 lead in the series. But Boston clawed its way back, winning three games in a row to set up a final, decisive Game 9. In front of more than 27,000 spectators at the Huntington Avenue Grounds, Boston’s Cy Young pitched a complete game shutout as the Americans won 3–0, giving birth to baseball’s greatest rivalry and making them world champions for the first time.
