The Boston Celtics center won the award five times in a six-season span from 1961 to 1966. In fact, he was so dominant defensively that he might have won even more had the league given out a Defensive Player of the Year Award in his day. As it was, he revolutionized how the game was played on both ends of the floor and led the Celtics to an unprecedented 11 NBA titles in 13 seasons.

He is widely considered one of the greatest and most dominant players in NBA history. Chamberlain holds numerous NBA records including the single-season and career scoring records. In addition, he is the only player in NBA history to average at least 30 points and 20 rebounds in a season. He also won four MVP Awards in his career.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was born on April 16, 1947, in New York City, New York. He was a star player on the basketball team at UCLA, where he won three NCAA championships. Abdul-Jabbar’s professional career began when he was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 1969 NBA draft. He played for the Bucks for six seasons, before being traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in 1975. Abdul-Jabbar spent the next 14 seasons with the Lakers, winning five NBA championships. He retired from the NBA in 1989 as the league’s all-time leading scorer.

Abdul-Jabbar was born Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor Jr. on April 16, 1947, in New York City. His father was an NYC police detective and his mother was a department store price checker. As a high school student, he changed his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar–partly in homage to the grand master ofIslamic religion, Imamu Amirul Mumineen Ali ibn Abu Talib (known as “Caliph Ali”), and partly to withdraw from what he saw as the oppression of black people in the United States.
He attended Power Memorial Academy, where he played varsity basketball for three years and was named New York State Player of the Year in his senior year. He then went on to UCLA, where he played for legendary coach John Wooden. During his time at UCLA, he won three NCAA championships (1967, 1968, and 1969), was named NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player all three years, and was named NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player in 1967 and 1969. He also set numerous individual records at UCLA, including being the first player to score more than 2,000 points in a season (2,325).
In 1969, he was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks with the first overall pick of the NBA draft. He spent 14 seasons with the Bucks before being traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in 1975. He retired from basketball in 1989 after 20 seasons in the NBA.
