History
In baseball, the World Series is the annual championship series of Major League Baseball (MLB). played between the American League (AL) pennant winner and the National League (NL) pennant winner. Prior to 1969, each league was represented by an eight-team playoff system whereby each league’s pennant winner played some combination of three division winners and two wild card teams; since then each league has been represented by three division winners and a single wild card team. Initially, only first-place clubs made it to post-season play; however, from+ 1903 onward several additional teams—the so-called “defeated finalists”—played exhibition games leading up to and during each year’s World Series to further whet fans’ appetite for post-season play. These exhibitions were variously referred to as “The Fall Classic”, “The Championship Season”, “October baseball”, or simply “The World Series”. The name “World Series” initially referred to rivalry between large cities with multiple professional baseball teams such as Boston vs Chicago or New York vs Philadelphia but is now used for MLB’s playoffs in general regardless of team locations or sizes. Until recently teams from California have also been very successful particularly from 1988 onward most notably with Oakland Athletics having won 9 division championships since 1995 along with 5 AL pennants since 1988 including 3 straight between 1988 and 1990 while also appearing in 2 straight World Series winning 1 in 1989 while losing in 1990 despite leading 4 games to 2 going into game 7 which they lost 9–7 thus becoming 1st team ever to lose game 7 after leading series 2–0, 3–1, and 4 games to 2 all while never trailing at any point during entire series becoming 1st team ever to do that only matched 20 years later by 2010 San Francisco Giants who beat Texas Rangers winning world series 4 games to 3 while being down 2–0 then 3–1 thus joining Athletics as only 2nd team ever who did that prior unmatched feat until 2010 then matched again 30 years later by 2020 Los Angeles Dodgers who did it for 3rd time beating Tampa Bay Rays 4 games to 2 after being down 2–0 and then 3–1 making Dodgers only 3rd team ever do that joining other 2 teams mentioned above

The team’s most recent appearance in the World Series before 2011 was in 2009, when they lost to the New York Yankees in six games.

The Cardinals’ opponent in the 2011 World Series was none other than the Texas Rangers, who were making their second straight appearance in the Fall Classic. The Rangers had lost to the San Francisco Giants in seven games the year before.

In a rematch of sorts from 2009, the Cardinals faced off against Rangers’ ace pitcher Cliff Lee in Game 1 of the 2011 World Series. This time, however, it was the Cardinals who came out on top, as they won 3-2 in 11 innings. The Cardinals went on to win Game 2 by a score of 8-2, and took a commanding 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.

After losing Game 3 by a score of 16-7, the Cardinals rallied back to win Game 4 by a score of 10-9 in 11 innings once again. With their backs against the wall, the Rangers avoided elimination by winning Game 5 6-2.

In what would prove to be an historic game, the Cardinals won Game 6 by a score of 10-9 in 10 innings after being down to their final strike twice.
