He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a player in 2009. In 2010, he was named by SI as one of their 50 Greatest Players of All Time.

The Sixers went into the 2001 NBA Finals as heavy underdogs. They had lost key players to injuries, and they were facing the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers, who had won the title in 2000. The Sixers won the first game of the series, but then lost the next four games. In Game 5, with the Sixers on the verge of elimination, Dikembe Mutombo made a clutch block of a shot by Lakers’ star Shaquille O’Neal. The Sixers went on to win the game, and then won Game 6 to force a seventh and final game. In Game 7, Mutombo had another key block, this time of a shot by Kobe Bryant, and the Sixers went on to win the game and the series. Mutombo was named the NBA Finals MVP.
