2017-2018 Regular Season MVP
The National Basketball Association Most Valuable Player (MVP) is an annual National Basketball Association (NBA) award given since the 1955-56 season to the best performing player of the regular season. The winner receives the Maurice Podoloff Trophy, which is named in honor of the first commissioner (then president) of the NBA, who served from 1946 until his retirement in 1963. Until the 1979–80 season, the MVP was selected by a vote of NBA players. Since the 1980–81 season, the award is selected by a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. Each member of the voting panel casts a vote for first to fifth place selections. Each first-place vote is worth 10 points; each second-place vote is worth seven; each third-place vote is worth five, fourth-place is worth three and fifth-place is worth one. Players receive five points for a first-place vote, three points for a second-place vote and one point for a third-place vote. The player with the highest point total wins the award.
Russell Westbrook
In his first season since Kevin Durant’s departure, Westbrook averaged a triple-double and broke Oscar Robertson’s single-season record. He began the season by posting at least 20 points, 10 assists and five rebounds in each of his first 10 games, becoming the first player in NBA history to do so. He also had 42 triple-doubles, the most in a season since Magic Johnson had 46 in 1988–89. Westbrook became just the second player ever to average a triple-double for an entire season, joining Robertson (1961–62).
James Harden
Houston Rockets shooting guard James Harden has been named the 2017-2018 regular season MVP. This is the first time Harden has won the award, which is given to the player who is considered to have the most value to his team. Harden led the Rockets to a franchise-record 65 wins this season, and they are currently in the second round of the playoffs.
2017-2018 Finals MVP
The 2017-2018 NBA Finals MVP was won by LeBron James, of the Cleveland Cavaliers. This was James’ third time winning the Finals MVP, putting him behind only Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson. He is also the only player in NBA history to win the Finals MVP with three different teams.
LeBron James
LeBron James was named the 2017-2018 NBA Finals MVP after leading the Cleveland Cavaliers to victory against the Golden State Warriors. This marks the fourth time that James has been named Finals MVP, and he is now tied with Michael Jordan for the most Finals MVPs in NBA history. In addition to his impressive performance on the court, James also made history off the court this year by becoming the first black man to be featured on the cover of Vogue magazine.
