In 1975, the franchise was founded as the San Diego Rockets, an expansion team originally based in San Diego. In 1971, the Rockets moved to Houston due to soaring attendance and game revenue in San Diego. The Rockets won only 15 games in their debut season as a franchise teamed with rookie head coach Tom Nissalke and aged players such as Elvin Hayes and Sergeant Swish (aka Dennis Johnson). Led by head coach Bill Fitch, they improved to 37 wins the next year but missed the playoffs with a 36–46 record.

In 1975, after four years of mediocrity, the Rockets drafted center Moses Malone with the number one overall pick. Malone went on to win Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player en route to leading Houston to their first NBA Finals appearance in 1981 against the Boston Celtics. The Rockets repeated as Midwest Division champions the next season but lost in the first round of 1982 playoffs to eventual champion Los Angeles Lakers despite having home court advantage. Despite not making it past the first round again until 1986, they did not miss playoffs for rest of 1980s behind star players such as Hakeem Olajuwon, Ralph Sampson and Vernon Maxwell.

The Golden State Warriors and the Toronto Raptors played an exciting finals series, with the Warriors winning in six games.
It was a closely contested battle, with the Raptors winning the first game and the Warriors taking the next two. The Raptors then evened the series with a win in game four, but the Warriors won the next two games to take the championship.
The Warriors were led by their star players, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant, who both played extremely well throughout the playoffs. Curry averaged 26.5 points per game, while Durant averaged 28.8 points per game.
The Raptors were led by Kawhi Leonard, who averaged 27.6 points per game during the playoffs. Leonard was named Finals MVP after averaging 28.5 points per game in the series against the Warriors.
